BRZ AT Turbo Limit

Hi,

Good day! I was wondering how much whp should I target with my AT BRZ?

Never intended to boost the brz since it was an AT but I found a very cheap greddy turbo kit (2nd hand) at my friends shop and decided to buy it. Now Im here trying to decide what whp to target just to be on the safe side for daily use (will never be used in a track or anything sporty for that matter).

Anyways all I have is the greddy turbo kit, Tomei Type 80 catback, I had the shop fabricate 3" pipes for the J pipe & down pipe(not sure).

Also when you say "Fully built engine" what actually do I need to change in the engine internals?

Sorry I dont know much what Im talking about here, since I pretty much dont have any clue with regards to cars.

270-300whp should be fine for daily use.

How are you not sure what the shop fabricated for you? I usually like to know what I pay for lol.

I don't think it's worth it to run a built engine on an auto. You're likely going to run into transmission issues unless you don't mind dumping a bunch of money into upgrading your transmission.

Try to read up on the ins and outs of this car or cars in general. Boosting an NA car is naturally going to lend itself to a higher chance of failure. It's nice to know how to troubleshoot things.

Rule #1 don't buy any used turbos.
It's the same story as told by countless gear heads, it's always 60% chance you bought someone else's headache.

Alright I'm going to assume you haven't done a ton of research on the technical side, so the first thing you need to know is that adding a turbo is not the same as magically adding power. You will be trading reliability, longevity, and throttle response for that power. If you don't know all the parts involved and how they work, you are setting yourself up for disaster. Even if you know exactly what you are doing, you are going to have your fair share of headaches.

More power output, more headaches. It's not going to be easy to reliably increase the output and there is a lot you need to know unless you have a crap ton of money you can blow through.

If you are still going through with it, here are the questions.
1. Is this your only mode of transportation?
2. Are all installs and tuning done by a reputable shop?
3. Are you aware of all environmental factors that will affect how your engine performs.
4. How much work or troubleshooting have you done previously.

Answer these to give folks an idea where you are coming from so we can direct you to the info you need to learn.

PS. Check out the forced induction section. You will probably get more folks who have turbo experience there.

Hello karlpox and welcome to our informative forum .......

First off, I suggest you re-read the previous posts (especially @Spuds post).

Secondly, I suggest that you consider selling the used turbo that you got to someone else.

Now, you have a dependable car that is fun to drive. IMHO, more power will not make your car any funner ....... all it will do is make it less dependable.

If you want to learn about cars, I suggest you buy a project car and wrench away ........

I agree with no 2nd hand stuff specially turbos. Cheap shouldn't be what makes you want to boost IMO. You need to do it right or like above ppl have said it could go quite bad for you.

But the auto trans it self handles boost very well. I boosted after 6 months went 3 years on one kit and wanted a change. Built the engine went with a better kit and bigger turbo. Now running 24psi on a FP Black Xona Rotor GT3582 on a COYODA turbo kit and stock transmission AT.

It holds fine but wouldn't let us push anything higher it did start to slip so there are limits obviously.

2nd had turbos are fine! However do a good inspection of it prior to buying. Make sure the turbine and compressor have no damage and everything looks good. Then send it out and have it rebuilt. This will cost around $400 to have done correct.

If one is newbie with them, then one wouln't know what to look for during inspection anyway, so it's back to game of luck.

I wouldn't go over 500whp on stock internals. But you can rock 450whp all day. If you want a built motor then ARP head studs and some forged pistons is all you need for like 700whp, but then you are running into tranny reliability issues. Anything more than 700whp and the tranny will only go another 100k miles before being a time bomb. Of course over 500whp and you will also need E85. Just mix that 50/50 with 91 and you are good to go. Also, the Greddy turbo will be getting major back pressure at 700whp, so try to run a 4'' straight pipe or you will only break 600whp.

@Stimmed The 2nd hand turbo is fine. Although I have no idea about them, I have a close friend who owns a big shop where I live checked it out and said that it was fine. How far did you reach with the stock internals?
@Irace86.2.0 We do not have E85 here sadly. SOrry for being such a noob but, by ARP head studs do you mean something like this ( http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/arp-...-kit-1709.html )? How about rods? Also the tuner told me that I would only reach around 250whp with my setup. Maybe 500whp is too much for me. Might aim somewhere lower and see how it feels after.

I wouldn't worry to much about your automatic transmission. I'm supercharged, on e-85 making 323 at the wheels and at 50,000 miles my automatic is doing just fine.

Can this apply for supercharger too?

I think it applies to all second hand parts whether it’s turbo, superchargers, suspension, engine parts, diffs etc etc.
