I usually find cars with modded exhausts or clear signs that some serious performance mods have been made, or even body panel damage as agressive - Not cosmetic lip kits. Second would be just to look "cooler", this is purely subjective but to me, it doesnt look any better. The car was deisgned by real designers. Adding lip kits that dont even match the body lines and are usually color black stands out like wearing construction boots under a business suit. Lastly, to protect from scrapes is arguably understandable. Though i realize a front lip may cost just as much as a surplus bumper and actually will make you scrape it more due to added lower reach - hencing putting your bumper at greater risk of misalignment. So..i think lip kits look best on seriously modded cars that need the additional downforce or whatever benefit they give. Or if your car was meant to look agressive to begin with. (Aventador-ish design with plenty of non organic jagged edges) otherwise,i always find them an eysore thinking "man the Kit just ruined that car". Any thoughts?
My thoughts are the same as AT vs MT. If anybody wants it then what is the issue? As long as they are not telling me I am lesser for not having one then I just don't care. We are not all after the same thing and that is good because then we would be just cookie cutter drivers.

Can they look good? Sure

But most look like what they are, a retainer for a pre-teen affixed with double sided tape. And I've never seen one that looks truly great on an 86.

I don't mind when they look like what they are, a stuck on appendage for a minor improvement in aero and a sacrificial lamb to anything it runs into like this:

Not this:

How can you complain that someone is offended by something (they aren't) when you yourself are complaining about how other people's cars look?

I have hydroplaned at 65-70 MPH. Pretty scary stuff. It rains so hard around here that you really have to pay attention. I had a Scion TC that had the same problem. I never modded the TC at all and it always had that problem. I also used to have a Nissan Versa but I never had that problem with it for some reason (maybe super-skinny tires?)

Because its not a complaint. Its me asking whats up with them, then sharing what i dont like and think about them in a complete and comprehensive manner (notice i made theee clear points) then asking for thoughts. Which some have so beautifully shared and have given insight to the whole topic. Such as the hydroplaning story, and the greddy which was pretty cool. While those who get offended, well, probably deserve to be. Its a forum...

That said, I have almost no paint and in some places very little plastic left under my front bumper.
Besides, who doesn't tire of the creepy feeling of the 2 tire wobble as you pull in anywhere?

After getting some nasty rock chips at the bottom of my OEM bumper, I'm looking at lip kits for a little extra protection down there. Also they look kinda cool.

Its not a complaint - hence the title "whats up with" , three main body points as to why i dont get them, (Note i did not even attack lip-users personas by calling them anything negative or complaining about them as people - post really just questioned a lip kits purpose of use) followed by a conclusion of "thoughts?" Its those who translate a thread to a personal-level discussion versus the actual post content itself that are obviously offended. Man meet internet.

You don't see how people would feel insulted?
Passive aggressive insults are still insults. You don't need to attack the personas to be insulting.
It is a subjective topic and you asked for thoughts. You will get subjective thoughts back.
What was your point in even starting the discussion?

Heya Tcoat, yes i do see why. A chunk of people are easily moved to emotion over the net. No face to face phenomenon. Its like how if you post a picture of a burger, youll always have people going "boring" "lame" "pic should have more colors" "should be this and that".

Anyway, point of the post was to want to know why people like/do lips and the points that may change my thoughts (which is why i shared my thoughts against them because the discussion can start from people disagreeing with either of the 3. And id be open to those discussions since im not overly sensitive.) i didnt expect the discussion to be against "whyd u post something like this bro??" u mean!" Because again, its supposed to be a exterior mods forum - not a "post why you LOVE exterior mods forum" perhaps changing my topic to "I dont like lips, why do you guys like them?" Would have been a better choice of words. But "whats up with" sounds ok to me. Clearly there are also people who understood and shared good insight so i guess the post ain't the problem - the reader is. Heres some definitions of a "forum" if it helps the others chill out. -Forum (legal), designated space for public expression in the United States
Internet forum, discussion board on the Internet - didnt even call anyone "stupid" "mean" "immature" for the lip. Its the act of putting the lip i talked about. Sure it could be passive aggressive but if i parked a ferrari beside a beater because its public parking and its the best place to do so for me, a calmer guy would go "wow ferrari", a sensitive guy would go "what a douche for rubbing a Ferrari in my face just because i drive a _____!" Lastly, im not complaining about subjective thoughts. I just explained that it wasnt a complaint to those who are saying im complaining. And attacking back those who directly attacked me. Well just one guy really. 8RZ. But if you think im pissed at him, lol its just the internet. Im not complaining either, just doing a lot of explaining. maybe ill just ignore the sensitive ones so as not to turn it to a debate. but ignoring would be rude and passive aggressive too wouldn't it? But if I dont debate, what is a forum for anyway but for all to just hit the "like" button and agree? Sorry for hitting on your comment 8RZ, nothing personal. I couldnt care less about you.

Were all learning and growing everyday, minds can easily be changed so keep posting and arguing level-headed people! (i got an AT after wanting MT so bad thanks to this forum and reading all the arguments)
