I won a Super Challenge once. It's definitely a mix of good driving and some luck. When I won, I hit two cones on one run, but Kinch hit three. When I got to the final pairing, it started snowing and I was in an AWD STU Subaru and Paul Brown was on Kumho 710s. I figured all I had to do was keep it clean then

Eric - you suck!
I punched 2 cones the first pairing only to come back and see that Caserta had a .499 RL

To win a Super you HAVE to have a pairing or 2 get lucky for you. It's the name of the game

I got a 2nd once as well. The winner spun through the finish line on the final side and went down the narrow finish chute backwards without hitting anything and beat me by 0.003 seconds.

Obviously, this was all a very long time ago when I was young and virile

I talked with him afterwards, said he had setup issues he couldn't figure out until too late. I don't think he'd throw away a win to win a Super (by the way it was his first Super Challenge Win and it's very easy to cone away a good chance at one; so trying to setup yourself for success will always almost end in failure).
Sorry I wasn't implying he was sandbagging for the Super Challenge. Just that in conversation with him he said he wanted that one more and I think it's because he has a shot at being the season end points champion. He's in a 3-way tie for 1st right now (https://dk1xgl0d43mu1.cloudfront.net...pdf?1500413412).

I was talking with Mark most of the weekend he was definitely trying to win but he had some strange issues with his TPMS sensors turning his traction control on mid-run and then something else with car setup after that. Packwood is a tough site to get your car dialed in for as it's not flat, grip changes significantly depending on where you are, and sometimes we have some pretty difficult bumps. There isn't a lot of areas to put your foot down and go so conserving momentum is pretty critical.

So I have been running RE71Rs , but decided to try a set of Rival 1.5S on my DS FRS. I have read for many cars, people find 2-5 PSI more than RE71Rs is optimal for Rivals. Is that what others have found for twins with 225/45-17s? Thx for any insight...

I think you can actually run the same pressures as you do on the Stones, but I'd recommend exactly what you stated to save the shoulder a little bit of wear. I haven't seen any drop off when running a bit under 35 psi when I started running them around 30 psi or just under, but the wear is improved.

I settled on 3psi higher front and rear and was pretty happy with that. I play with it up and down ever so slightly based on course and temperature.

Different topic: I've tried the Nexens because the BFG and Bridgestone were out of stock for all of June and I hate them. Can't wait to get back onto BFGs at Nationals.

Curious - why do you hate them and how do you feel they compare?

People have said they need/tolerate less heat than other tires and that's correct. They're definitely at their optimal grip much quicker than the others but I couldn't get them to stop pushing on my setup no matter what I changed. It's a lot easier to slide with them and it was hurting me in sweepers. Turns that I should have been taking 3-4mph faster I was pushing mid-corner right at the Apex.

With the BFGs there was minimal push and it was easy to dial it back in. I couldn't quite get the oversteer I wanted that I liked with the Bridgestones but it made up for it a lot with mid corner and corner exit.

The Nexens do turn in much quicker though which is a huge plus over the BFGs and they're slightly quicker at turn-in than the Bridgestones.

Thanks for the feedback. I've only driven my car on Nexens, although I've raced the BFG and Bridgestone on other cars. On the Nexens, I can loosen the car up pretty well just by stiffening the rear shocks. We'll see if that holds true in Lincoln.

56 entrants and I know of at least one more coming tonight. 5th biggest class this year! Hopefully they kick the Camaro out next year so the twins don't just die in street.

How much of that is the Camaro and how much of that is the driver? I get to go up against Brian locally but the altitude doesn't help when going up against WRXs.

I assure you guys the Camaro is an overdog in this class. We'll see what happens at nationals but don't be surprised at how much faster it is.
