After watching the Monte, it was nice to see Toyota in the WRC again and Citroen is back too. So that brings them back to 3 factory teams. The new cars remind me of the WRC cars from 10 years ago when costs started to skyrocket before they scaled back. I think in the WRC talent is still more important than machinery- Ogier is in a non-factory car but hasn't lost a step despite that and little pre-season testing. Ogier may turn out to be greater than Loeb was. Loeb, for as great as he was, always drove with one factotry team but Ogier has won rallies with Citroen, VW and now M-Sport in a Ford. He's going to win championships with 2 different Marques (let's face it- he's going to win it all again this year). Plus, he beat Loeb head-to-head in the same car.

Less work it is to get the homologation numbers out the better. Yaris today is what the corolla was 2 decades ago. Perfect for banging up and rally platform. Corolla today is a bloated camry replacement while the camry moves up a tier as a test mule for lexus. I for one think the Yaris would make a welcome addition into rally. |

No one can say they'd rather see a Ford Focus over a RS200. Grocery getters don't attract crowds or excitement and so we get the WRC of today. WRC today actually has higher performing cars than Group B. But the sexiness of the high power, awesome noise and exotic cars of that era trump even the WRC cars of the late 00's. Exciting cars draw crowds and that was a big part of rallying in its heyday in the 70's and 80's. The Yaris IS in WRC right now. I'm not sure what you mean by would. there's nothing cheap about these cars at all. They may as well start with an expensive exotic car it takes just as much work and money to convert it. These cars look like shit, have a shit name and no one cares so people aren't watching. Subaru pulled out of the WRC a log ass time ago- you have to catch up, kid. Subaru is no more a rallying brand than Lancia is. They saw the way it was going and bailed out. WRC is lacking in manufacturer teams. They're lucky if 12 full WRC cars start an event. Portugal had the most full WRC cars of any round enter this year... 14. Every rally has a WRC2 car in the points because there just are not enough full WRC cars and there's little interest in an econobox that costs over half a million U$D. That's a lot of groceries. There are 4 major teams in the WRC now. Only 3 are factory teams. Toyota, Citroen and Hyundai. Not exactly a lineup you're going to buy a T-shirt for. Ford has a team but it is not a factory team. Citroen was a non-factory team for 2 years before returning this year. |

that is so damn lame. What on earth are they scared of? Take any Yaris and give it an aftermarket suspension and it is fun as hell, but only 400? And only fwd? dull.

Interesting article in this month's Evo magazine about the new Yaris GRMN. The opening paragraph I found amusing....
