My buddy's was a legit 9 second (slicks at the track) car. To touch on how Godly the car was, (and point out that they can actually handle if you're not Fast and Furiousing them) it had a static 53:47 f:r weight distribution with an iron block inline six in the front. The 86 had to cheat with people in the car to match that, despite a short aluminum flat four. Also proper suspension. No front MacStruts. They were pretty much untouchable tuned until Nissan released the twin turbo, nearly self driving, AWD computer-mobile GTR. But that really did set the benchmark high, so I actually don't have that high of a hope for the new one. ...unless it looks like an angry catfish.

At the end of its production cycle it featured in a Best Performance Car showdown in one of the US mags and finished mid pack slightly behind the new C5 Vette (Porsche took the overall) . Put down a .94g (or .97g, I remember .97 but that seems high) skidpad and was only beat by the 911 in braking. And remember that it was basically nerfed in the power department by the 'gentleman' agreement for Japanese car companies' power output. It was a serious car. If anything F&F was detrimental to its image by implying it was just a straight line rice rocket, and having people try to live that dream. Drag racing is probably it's weakness as they don't hook that well, and the jokes about them.is that they'd only race from a roll (but could kill fast bikes when modded well). The drag emphasis and clique-y nature of owners killed its real total performance potential by chasing retarded dyno numbers with unstreet-able giant turbos, rather than responsive engine builds and working on its incredible handling potential, as all the forum 'experts' were for power, no gurus like Racecomp to educate the owners in the nuances of handling performance. Le sigh...

Those who were old enough to drive before FnF knew how special this Supra was... along with all of the other Japanese halo cars of the 90's. Those were also the guys who used to buy the Best Motoring VHS tapes and Option magazines from old Yaohan (now Mitsuwa) Japanese supermarkets.

I had two Supras. Basic Performance Upgrades (BPU) included exhaust, downpipe, boost controller and boost cut controller. PSI would go up to 18-22 if I remember correctly. About 425whp, so an extra 150hp with about $1500 investment. |

I've seen plenty of USDM GTEs making 320whp bone stock in my days... The horsepower ratings were definitely just "estimates". Obviously, there are variations between dynos, but still impressive.
As the other guys stated before, JDM Supras definitely made less due to ceramic turbos, 440cc injectors, and the MAP setup with a little bit of a relaxed tune. A lot of people dynoed them right around 270-280whp stock, so I suppose they weren't terribly far off from the Gentleman's agreement.

The JDM Supras and the other halo cars were we all under powered per the gentlemen's aggreement.
Toyota gave the U.S the better version Supra to compete with the Vette and 911. A decision which solidified the Supra's legacy. http://mkiv.supras.org.nz/specs.htm

Um with a downpipe and exhaust my otherwise stock Supra makes 380 at the crank. Total caged animals. People also seem to forget they were the best handling car of the early 90s in all instrumented tests. They are so so so much more than straight line monsters. Only downside is numbish steering and targa top engineering (chassis goes to shit with it off). On the road course the power delivery can be a handful but yeah, otherwise, it is God's car.
