Apologies in advance if this has been posted. It would be nice if someone can translate what he said, at least his final verdict on the cars. |

From his verbal and physical expressions, his excitement seemed to elevate as the test progressed from MX-5==>Fiat124==>BRZ. So I guess he liked the BRZ more than the first two.
From BRZ==>86, I can't guess much as his expressions shown about equal level of excitement between the two. Just mumbling about the differences in driving characteristics between them, which shouldn't be much to begin with since it is almost the same car, engineering wise. At the end, he gave Fiat124 a win over MX-5. I don't care much to guess but I think he liked to torque-rich turbo 124 better than puny 1.5 litre N/A MX-5. He gave it a tie between 86 and BRZ. My funny guess is that, at the verdict, he was saying something like "It is very hard to pick between the BRZ and the 86, but you wouldn't be disappointed in choosing either one of them..." something in that sense These are all my guesses from his gestures and expressions though. Anyone with Japanese proficiency can confirm?? |

Finally watched it. Comparisons were made between the siblings, but the unrelated cars weren't compared to each other. The gist of it: tsuchiya enjoyed the fiat more than the miata saying the added torque made it a better way to experience the true merits of the fr layout. He found the miata's 1.5 lacking and would have gave it a perfect score if mazda put a 2 liter in it. The brz/86 was a tie, due to them being the same car, just with different suspension tuning. He felt that the suspension on both were highly improved over the original '13 model who's suspension he now reveals felt cheap, with the new brz having a more supple, grown up luxurious suspension feel and the new 86 having a more sporty but also supple feel. The 86 had less roll than the brz.

This is the 1.5L miata not sold in the US. The US Miata has a 2.0L.
I've autocrossed my FRS in C-Street prep back to back with a friend's ND Miata in similar C-Street prep. The Miata clearly had more power down low in the revs and I went faster in the Miata... even my first ever run in the Miata was more than half a second faster than my best time in the FRS after 8 runs.

You need to multiply the gear ratio with the final drive ratio. These are the ratios I found here: http://www.thecarconnection.com/car-...55962,40047913
If you do the multiplications, you will see in columns E & F that the BRZ has shorter gears (bigger is better): Overall, the MX-5 has an unusual long final drive ratio. I am sure they did it for low consumption on the highway. |
