"telepathic" steering - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I'm sure we've all heard this trope in a review for the twins at some point- the steering is so good, it's like I think it and it goes- like it's telepathic steering.

Or some crap along those lines anyway. Well, today, that telepathic steering saved me from a crash.

So I'm on the way home and in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the highway. Seriously, FDOT- what sort of dumbasses decide to do highway roadside sweeping and clog up a lane of traffic during rush hour?

Morons. Anyway, I went to get into the middle lane from the left lane

and we were going at a constant (albeit slow) speed, I was several seconds in back of the car in front of me. Check my right shoulder (I lingered a little too long) and when I looked forward again, I guess we were going a bit quicker than I thought, I guess I hadn't compensated my following distance enough for the speed and I was ON TOP of the car in front of me.

No time to think, I don't believe it was my hands that pulled the steering wheel and got me into the next lane perfectly (no slop in the steering, no over steer moment when I got there, no losing the rear end, no front end washing out when I started to turn).

I think the car read my mind and telepathically put itself in that spot where I wanted it. Perfectly composed and lightning quick. No other car I have owned would have done that so sharply.

This thing is really awesome.

Yep! Been saved from 2 car accidents.

Big semi suddenly joined hwy from white lane at about 5mph so I had to swerve to left and suddenly on my left was a vehicle going over 85mph+. Was 3 of us in 2 lane road. I had to swerve back right.

2nd time there was a big big bird of prey double the size of a chihuahua that was on road [probably slammed dead instantly] and barely dodge with inches from hitting it without much effort.

Been in a similar situation when I had to simply get the phukk outta there, and ever since then, I keep throwing myself on the next lane over fitting in between cars. Her steering and size are so perfect.

Very precise quick steering in this car. Saved me from a lot of pot holes here in dirty jersey

One time I was on I-95S and they had the highway coned off to one lane. About a mile in there looked to be an opening for the lanes to go back to normal but it turned out to be an opening for an exit.....not wanting to exit I somehow got in between two cones without hitting them and now was driving on the restricted part of the highway. Completely panicking at this point I took a deep breath and calmed down, then almost without thinking I flicked the wheel to the left and made it back to the one lane again without touching any cones; I definitely praised the car's handling that day.

I'm breaking the car in right now, meaning driving the living daylights out of it. And I'm noticing how good and direct the steering is. Super accurate and very confidence inspiring. And that's after 2 days!

Yep, between the great brakes, quick steering and mrs humfrz screaming, I have avoided a few smashups.

You think it's good now, just wait until you upgrade tires! I finally wore out my original tires and went to the extreme, Bridgestone RE71R's. Holy cow! The car feels almost like a different car. Responds almost instantly and grips like mad. Who cares if it sounds like you're driving mud terrain tires when it performs like this!

Yeah not even to mention how good the brakes are. I had a Genesis Coupe before and the brakes were the #1 problem with it. The FRS has a lot less weight to top and that helps but the brakes really are fantastic too.

Sometimes people ask me why I got an FRS instead of something like a mustang with more power. It's hard to explain why handling is important. The numbers I could quote in comparison just don't relay what the car does to most people. They just want to know HP

so I explain that the HP isn't even an issue with this car, it's the lack of torque and they really look at me like I have 2 heads.

I should just carry a link to this thread in my pocket for casual conversations about my car.

That was the first thing I noticed on the test drive, the pedal is very stiff, modulation is fantastic. The brakes are much more telepathic than the steering for me.

The steering is very direct, quick, and precise. But it does not have that much feedback. It's probably due to the electric assist, and they did a MUCH better job than 99% of electric steering setups, but I still prefer the feedback from a hydraulic setup.

Granted, I am comparing the steering to BMWs that cost twice as much as the twins and Porsches that cost triple. At its price point the 86's steering setup is nothing short of amazing.

A lot of people complain of power, but that's because people don't realize what the purpose of this car is. Yes, it's slow in a straight line, but to outrun an alligator you have to be quick and agile. The precision is what i love, the pedals, shifter, steering, all of it. Tell this car what you want it to do, and it will do exactly that.
