Another blockage by engine sealant. I hope they find the guy that was putting these blocks together.

Are you saying it's happened more than once? Do you have a link?

Edit: oops, just saw the one on the previous page, are there more?

I wonder if this could explain my phantom misfiring that had no other explanation.

My car twice in 2 years has started brutally misfiring at idle and continued to for about a week or two .. then suddenly returns to normal operation.

Every last ignition and fuel component was tested -- I even (I was going to upgrade anyways) replaced port injectors and my plugs. Nothing ever made a difference except time. The only code ever present was P0300 which is not very helpful.

I think they only sell short blocks. I believe heads have to be purchased in pieces and assembled.

Update on the FRS: Toyota authorized new short block, driver side cam shaft and cam gears. Will get an eta tomorrow. The excess sealant they found was with the driver side exhaust cam gear which was flopping around. Sometimes it would restrict oil flow to the cam gear and throw off timing, sometimes it would let oil through.

My service manager invited me to come to the dealer and speak to the guys working on the car and look over all the parts while they wait for the new parts.

Will get an eta for parts tomorrow.

Good news. Pleased you're getting fixed under warranty.

I had similar issues where Toyota GB flipped back and forth saying they'd replace under warranty or not.

I'm running in the new (short) engine now and it appears to be fine. Not sure I have quite so much confidence in the car now though.

That's my worry. I was hoping to use the car as a daily driver for a few years and eventually turn it into a track car when the warranty ends. Now I dont think I want to take the risk without a warranty.

Ive been watching ND MX5 transmission issues and will likely switch to the Mazda in a year or so since they seem to have solved the issue in later builds.

My confidence in Subaru built engines has dropped.

Somewhat "common" issue. When it is diagnosed at least.

Almost all done... This was yesterday, the motor should be in the car today and should be getting finished up tomorrow.

Happy to say the car is back home and seems to be sorted. Read the description in the picture of my invoice to see what was wrong. The issue should be sorted for good this time, unless excess sealant made its way somewhere in the rebuild too.

Edit: Two weeks after the new short block, the engine started knocking again and this time the traction control and abs lights came on with the check engine light. Toyota offered to buy the car back when I asked to start the lemon law process.
