I only used mine for plugging in the values after first solving everything symbolically. It really was only useful for homework problems.

I made it through both high school and undergrad calculus and physics without a calculator. It was during the "yea, they exist but they are stupid expensive so not everyone can afford them and you need to know how to do it manually first" time period.

Even if they were allowed I would have had to done without. They cost more than the cars I was driving at the time.

For a lot of the upper level stuff, you don't even really need the calculators. It's not going to help you figure out how to integrate correctly. The biggest boon is being able to graph a function rapidly, but if you're patient you can do it manually.

When I got of the Army in 81 I worked in a hardware store for a while. There was a cabinet filled with calculators priced anywhere for $400 to $1200 (and that is 1981 dollars). Some were first gen consumer calculators that had been there since the early 70s. For those not familiar with calculators back then these had less functions than most you can buy from the Dollar Store today. The owner would not touch the prices even though by then they had started to drop. One day we came in and somebody had broken in and taken all of them. The insurance actually paid out on the 1970s values! I still suspect the store owner to this day.
