It's my understanding that the OP is talking about (concerned about) the driveshaft in his car ..... more specifically, the carrier bearing along the driveshaft.

The gear rattles at high RPM in any gear, its a common problem with manuals

What do you mean the gear rattles at high RPM? Does it make noises or just the shift knob shaking?

Shift knob shakes but I get the sound of metal on metal. Dealer is going to replace that. Its a common problem with manuals, something to do with the reverse lockout or something. Cant touch it otherwise I void the warranty

22mm feels about ballpark to me. I've messed with mine some.

It doesnt feel seperated but after asking my father whos been a mechanic for many years he also insists that the amount of play there is not normal. As well is it weird that only about 80-85% of the time it acts up when i'm driving and not 100% of the time? Also it seems to be a lot worse on my days to work in the rain

Well now, there you have it ....... depression; driving to work ..... in the rain ....

Seriously, you mentioned that your car was rear ended. It's possible that the differential was "shifted" a bit, causing a misalignment of the driveshaft.

Again, I suggest you (and your father, if he is handy) take the car into an auto shop, have it put up on a hoist, run it in gear and observe the drive line.

I was surprised with the amount of play myself. The only way to know for sure is to get in there and visually inspect it. It's really easy to look at from underneath the car.

I'm sticking even more with a bent or otherwise damaged driveshaft. It takes very little to throw it out of whack.

In the rain you say. I am going to throw another theory at you which in light of your prior accident may also be relevant. It may not be your drive shaft at all but could be your exhaust. I bent a hanger on the exhaust on my old Talon and at certain speeds, a particular rev range and especially when the roads were wet with puddles it would thump like mad. I also blamed the driveshaft or dif for the problem. Took me weeks to figure it out and then one day I noticed the bent hanger. Twisted it back and never had the noise again. May be worth a look.

This is how it is with flutter. Could be fine and stable until just the right input kicks over the initial resonance. If it's something as heavy as a driveshaft, once it gets going, it could easily rip itself apart.

I'll go ahead and check if it was a bent exhaust hangar but almost positive it's the driveshaft, it only happens when in gear and as soon as I throw it into neutral it goes away. Also, these past 2 days it seems as if the car is driving fine with a chatter sound every now and then. But I've also haven't driven far to make it noticeable.

Wait, are you saying while it's vibrating, if you throw it into neutral and coast it goes away? At the same speed?

The driveshaft is constantly connected to the rear wheels. If the car is moving, the driveshaft is spinning.

In this "region" thats pretty much it, you cant give them an excuse to void your warranty. Not much u can do about it if they do, other than lengthy, expensive lawsuits etc and the outcome is not gauranteed. They dont want me to touch it I wont
