Depends on the wing shape, but technically a wing starts to work as soon as air passes over it, and the downforce increases at roughly a square function of the speed, ie double the speed you get 4X the downforce.
Formula SAE cars are now generating large downforce numbers, at speeds under 65mph. More downforce means higher cornering speeds, and faster lap times. As for a motorized wing, that square function is going to be the biggest obstacle, as the aero loads increase, the actuator has to cope with it. |

You are messing with the wrong end. Add a splitter on the front. If you also have the undercovers on the upper level model you are all set. I don't even have a factory wing, just a bare trunk, stock suspension, no STI drop suspension, and my BRZ is rock solid cruising at 192KPH. Why 192? Because the ECU cuts at that point. The S model I drove without the splitter AND the factory wing would begin to lift at 160+. That's why I put the money on the wood for the splitter and I'm glad I did. |

Have you tried looking at the Mini Cooper raised wing? It's compact and may work.

Who would go to all the trouble without actual real numbers on the aero?
This could be stillborn when the aero goes all wrong. Sometimes tech stuff looks cool, and I am sure factories use it on some models partially because it looks cool. That doesn't mean someone without the proper design tools should mess with this stuff except maybe the mechanism. The flap design and its behaviour need real data to do it without possible adverse effects. I am digging a SARD fixed wing which is functional at highway speeds. The added drag, high cost and possible ridicule from people for having a "rice wing" has held me back, though I stumbled on a missed deal for what looks to be the right price for a copy.

I had similar thoughts about the SARD, I think the surrounding mods really do have an impact if the SARD can be pulled off well

My little BRZ is one of the most enjoyable cars I've owned. I realized exactly what it is, I was looking for exactly what it is and I love it because it is how it is. Anything I do will make it less fun. The deal was if anything fails or becomes a real barrier to what i want to do then that will get upgraded. So far, I just hated the stock wheels and stereo. Nice wheels and nice AV head unit week one and nothing since. |

that's a cool feature! I just got the sard wing a month back and thought about doing something like this. This could be a fun project that I could try over the winter.
