Reverse Lockout not Engaging
Hey guys! So, I just got myself a used BRZ and am super happy with it. However, I'm not sure what the previous owner did, but I noticed when trying to shift into first gear, there was nothing preventing me from shifting into reverse. I don't even have to pull up on the "ring" of the shifter; it just slides all the way over. Now, this is not only incredibly frustrating, but also very dangerous, and I was hoping that you bright folks could help me figure out how to fix this issue, preferably without buying an aftermarket shifter. Thanks in advance!

Previous owner probably fiddled with the reverse lockout pin so that it is always in the "open" position. Depending on how it was done, it should be reversible, or at the very least put it back into a lockable position.
Can you contact the previous owner, or did you get this from a dealer? You might need to do a little light disassembly to see what's been done.

Sounds like they took an aftermarket lockout off, and didn't put it back together right. There is a pin that attaches the collar to a cable, they might have just plain not installed it. You can use aftermarket installation instructions for reference. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69811

Also a scary 3rd option. This happened to my old wrx with a sti swap after I sold it to a friend. Couple months after it stopped needing to use the lockout collar to go into rev the transmission failed. Not sure what all failed in it but yea.

Thanks so much for the input guys! I bought it from a private seller, so I'll ask him if he knows anything about this. Seems like I'm going to have to disassemble this guy tomorrow to get to the issue. I'm hoping and praying that it isn't a sign of a transmission failure... fingers crossed! I'll update when I find out what's up. You guys are great

It's a really simple mechanism. Intuitive once you get the boot off.

If I may tack on to your more helpful post, OP, align that plate so the lockout centers the gearshift in both first and second gear gates. Make sure it's not cockeyed.

Thanks for the help, guys! I got to the root of the problem. It was indeed the shift lock plate. Previous owner had it aligned too far to the left. Easy fix! Quote:
