I'm more wondering why the Forester XT is only available in CVT.

I just meant that Subarus used to be that weird car that nobody really knew, had a very niche audience and delivered stealthy practical performance, kinda like Saabs used to. Now, along with all the success comes the need to appeal to the masses a la Camry.

Gotta keep with CAFE standards...so one way to do that is with a CVT. Look at the automatic Yaris (aging 4-speed) and the CVT Corolla. The Corolla, even though it is a larger vehicle with more features, gets pretty much the same mpg as the Yaris.

I do, however, wonder how much Subaru's CVT's can handle their turbo'd power.

Theoretically, a CVT would be a great match with a turbo charged engine since it should help stay within the power band. I've driven a new wrx with a CVT and it drove surprisingly well, whether it can keep up with any power upgrades is up for debate. My outback also has a CVT and both don't have the same weird "rubber band" feel as other CVTs I've driven. Maybe Subaru has one of the better CVTs in market?

It's not the matching the power band part I'm concerned about, it's the reliability when paired with "higher hp."

I've only driven Toyota CVTs, and I really don't mind them (I wouldn't get one, but that's because I'll get a m/t for as long as I can lol).

I would have a WRX in my garage if it was offered with a dual clutch auto and not a CVT.
