This thread inspired me to buy some more 15208AA130 filters.

Got them here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Subaru-E...BV5iUP&vxp=mtr

The Subaru OEM filter has a specific oil bypass spring rating, so I would disagree with your assessment of it being "just a paper filter"

Anybody here try the STI filter for the BRZ?

http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/sti-...l#.VmobN-ODFBc

Went to the subaru dealer and they said that filter would void my warranty, even tho it is made by STI...

Anyone know if the sti version has the valve inside like the OEM black filter?

It's details but if you asked Toyota if their filter can be used on a Subaru, the official (and legal) response would be that it is not designed for Subaru BRZs.

In reality we all know what works and what doesn't. But for the average person who relies on a dealer for service, it's best that they stick with a part that won't give the dealer grounds (reasonable or otherwise) to deny legit service work.

That's actually incorrect. It needs to meet manufacturer standards, not be the manufacturers part. OP your are fine picking up anything that is up to industry standards, i.e. Subaru or Toyota will be fine.

What about it is incorrect?

I am just saying that we all know what works, but some dealers with incorrectly trained service technicians may give additional hassle for no legitimate reason.

At the end of the day, if you ran a Toyota filter on your Subaru, no one cares as long as it meets the required specs (which, I might add, are not published for us to reference). But the average tech might just say "we can't touch your car because you have a non-OEM filter" which is complete crap.

If it's a OEM filter it will not void the warranty.
