Everyone who replied....thank you very much! I am dealing with the Subaru service dept where I bought the car and they obviously don't know WTF they are talking about. I want a nice look, with a little more tire than the skinny stock.....looks like 215 or 225 then.

I like to think I have some mental horsepower, but this wheel/tire thing makes me feel like sofaking......

Toyota in Japan has an 18" optional handling package that runs staggered 215 in the front and 225 in the rear with 7.5 width rims.

Subaru in Japan has an 18" optional STI setup that runs square 225 setup with 7.5 width rims.

Do the 215. The 225 is even too wide for the stock rim and you'll have too much sidewall flex resulting in slow transient response.

The reasons some people like them on a 7" rim are that it has a tad more stick to it and it lays into the corner softer so it's more predictable.

Ideally you want to be .5" less tread width vs rim width for adequate grip and reduced sidewall flex. Now this makes the ride a little more harsh but the PSS tires are an incredibly well riding tire so there won't be an issue with that.

Don't listen to those tech people at your dealer lol

Why is the 225/45 tires better than the 215's? For looks? I really don't see a reason why 225's would be better in terms of performance on 17x7s. It's probably actually worse since it will affect gearing. You won't gain much grip either since 225's aren't recommended on the stock wheels. It's just added mass.

So 215/45/17 x 7 then?

Is that the final verdict here?

Yes go 215/45/17 tires. If you are getting michelin pilot super sports, they will look better than the stock 215's. They look more meatier. They are also ultra comfortable and very sticky for the steeet. You will not be dissappointed

If you want a little more meat go with a 225, that's a safe bet.

It's very common to run a 245/40 on a 7" wheel in street class autocross cars, but I would daily that.

^Nice Tires. To be honest though, you most likely won't get "extra grip" from a 225 tire on 17X7 rims. Tread width of that 225 tires will effectively be the same as a 215 tire on 17X7 wheels. You may have more comfort from the larger sidewall though.

@shattered_memory I agree, but I should've mentioned that my situation is a little different than that OPs. Should this set of tires last, I will swap them over to wider wheels in the future. IFF I was sticking with 17x7 I'd definitely save some money and stick with 215.

This. Plus they are insane in the rain. Had torrential downpours in LA before I sold the EvoX and it didn't squirm one bit when hitting standing water.

AYE!
