Your situation has zero to do with what I'm referring to in this thread. In your case, your wife driving any car is scary because she's just learning to drive. It has nothing to do with the fact that she's female. Best of luck to her in learning!!

I introduced my girlfriend to driving a stick in my 88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe probably 8 years ago. She could grasp the concept but was scared of the car. I had a lot of work done to it back then. She eventually bought her 99 Cougar, v6 with a 5-speed and I actually taught her how to drive that car. She put something like 60k miles on that car and it still has the original clutch. She never smoked the clutch and it's still going strong.

Hell, at one point, we decided to car pool and we were using my 97 Trans Am. Full bolt on 6-speed car. She never had a problem driving it and really enjoyed it. I was more comfortable letting her drive it than any of my friends that have been driving manuals for much longer than her.

She test drove the FRS with me. Any time I buy a car, I keep her in mind and make sure she enjoys driving it too.

The thread title was very gender neutral, and I bet that was intentional. We all know that there are plenty of people - male AND female - who can't drive MT. If you own a car with MT and are in a relationship, there's a decent chance that your SO doesn't know how to drive your car well, or perhaps at all.

After several weeks of being scared of stopping and starting on a hill, asking him "is that burning smell normal", the e-brake miraculously being activated instead of rolling into the car behind me, and endless constructive criticism I finally got comfortable driving on the rare occasion.

When I got my FRS, I wanted to get it in M/T because driving the tC was really fun. I did not drive the FRS for the first 3 weeks of ownership because the clutch was so different and I went back to being scared of messing the car up. Fast forward nearly 2.5 years of ownership my husband continues to teach me today. My newest skill that I have learned over the past year is heel-toeing while downshifting. I don't use it all the time because it is just not necessary, but I have been able to put a smile on my husbands face when I heel-toe to take a clear corner a little more aggressively than usual.

To the gents that have tried to teach their spouse how to drive M/T and have failed I still commend you just as much as those who have succeeded. Continue to encourage and keep your criticism constructive, you may surprise yourself in the end.

I know I am going to get flamed for saying this but at least the comments could be entertaining to read! Stereotypes do exist for a reason, but two of the most popular don't apply to me. I'm an Asian female driver and bad driving is not in my vocabulary. You don't have to believe me, I will still smile at you from my rear view mirror any day.
Ha! The wife taught me to drive a manual in a first generation tC (it was her car). We both found the FR-S easier to drive when I got it. Clutch was unforgiving to me when learning on the tC. :-P Made my wife laugh more than once! Doh! :-P

She loves driving it, and she's a pretty good driver, although I have yet to get her onto an autocross course. However, as her daily driver has been a Jeep Liberty for the past 11 years, she doesn't quite have the pothole-avoidance reflexes down that I wish she had, so I'm in constant fear of her coming home with a big smile in the rim of my Traklites...

I had an XJ Cherokee before we got the Libby, and everyone was moaning about how the new KJ would never live up to the old motor, SFA, etc., but the 3.7 pulls easily as well as the old 4.0 HO at low rpms, and while an SFA will articulate better at extreme compression/droop, the KJ IFS performs admirably when offroading. It's also fun having a 5 speed with the V6, which just makes it even more usable. I added an OME kit and 31's and 4.10s a couple of years ago, and it rides better than it did when new. Like any Jeep, the biggest issue is battling rust.

But we digress from the OT...

Jeeps are really fun if you know how to handle their little idiosyncrasies. I have a friend with a Renegade Trailhawk and it's an absolute riot to drive in the sand and grasslands -- and it's not too bad on the road either.

I don't have a spouse, but I've let my bf drive my car. As it is different from his 5 speed, I get annoyed when he "forgets" there's a 6th speed. Whether he really forgets, or if he likes driving at high rpms, he's not being gas contentious. No biggie though.

It's hard coming from a 5 speed. This is my first 6 speed and it took a few weeks to remember to shift to 6th all the time. It does make you feel like a goober when you forget lol.

I know right!
In my Hennesy Venom GT, I am constantly forgetting to reach for 6th on the way to the grocery store
