There's lots of methane in the universe. Not formed the same way as trapped hydrocarbons in the Earth's crust. Don't get me started, in university my majors were organic chem/ microbio but I did particularly well in Astronomy. Also, lots of ammonia on Saturn, Uranus, Neptune I think.

It doesn't need to be a debate.

@stugray is helping us shed light on a very complex subject.. which, as most complex subjects, requires a bit of conversation

Stu happens to like the most effective form of scientific conversation- the Socratic kind

Same with me. The only reason I know about the subject at all is that Stephen Hawking made fun of it a few weeks ago.
Seemed appropriate to throw it out there as the majority of the people on this forum are 'of the younger crowd'.
Now all of you get off my lawn!

Funny I never checked your location but it did occur to me you might be in CO, seriously.
I was chronic for years and finally decided to stop almost 2 years now. Still score a zipper for the wife every 2 to 3 months though.

I do not dispute that some of the petroleum on earth is from decomposed plant/animal material (way over 90% of the contribution would be plant), it is just a tiny portion of the total.

Again, IF petroleum comes from plants, where did all the hydrocarbons on Titan come from?

If you were to distill down the organic material from the maximum number of monkeys one could possibly fit in even an enormous human's rectum, I doubt you could even get one quart of petroleum.
So that couldn't possibly account for all of the methane on titan.

Wait.. unless of course you have some condition that would allow room for an infinite # of monkeys (and at least a few copies of Shakespeare)

What if it was God's rectum?

Are you suggesting that the creator's digestive tract is less than 100% efficient?

Should we shift this debate to the origin of life?
Since I believe that "petroleum-like" substances exist throughout all planetary systems (and even in interstellar space) why would we believe that life first started here on a planet that is only a few billion years old?

It is far more likely to have originated elsewhere and rained down on this planet as single celled life forms.

I'll even bet that once we burrow down into Europa and have a look, we will find complex life-forms living in thermal vents almost identical to the type found on Earth.

The oceans of Europa are thought to contain more water than all of the water on the Earth (i.e. It's a REALLY BIG ocean).
Oh and there would be "Oil" there too.
