So since Motul 8100 0w-20 is SM rated not SN does that mean it is not recommended for e85? Would it matter for non-regular use of e85 (like once every 5 fillups)?

I have the same question.

SN is latest spec and is specifically tested for E85 use & therefore deals with it best. Having said that I have in the past used SM/GF4 Castrol Edge 0W20 & it performed well with high TBN of 5.4 & no fuel dilution after 3000miles on the juice.

I'm curious what kind of oil filter you guys using?
OEM
Fram ( regular / synthetic )
Bosh ( regular / synthetic )
Other brands
Thanks

I'll be changing oil this weekend for e85
Planing on using Pennzoil platinum ultra 0-30w
Still have 1 OEM filter but was thinking using fram synthetic selling for $11 or bosh synthetic $13

I think I'm going to give Mobil 1 0W-20 a try. I asked sportsguy83, he's a long time E85 user & thats what he uses. I'll just change every 3500 miles, there have been no failures yet on E85 afaik so thats a good sign. We already know from the WRX & STI that subie motors like the E85. Not to mention the fact that I'm sure many people are running E85 unaware that they're supposed to change oil more frequently.
I'm intrigued by this as well since E85 seems to ask for 3000mile between oil changes. May consider going with the Mobil 1 0w20 which seems to be $27 for a 5-qt jug and $7 for 1-qt bottle. Compared to $70 for 6-qt of Eneos Sustina 0w20.

Moving from Royal Purple 0w-20 (not HPS) to Redline 0w-20 (SN rating for E85 and forced induction) for my 1yr oil change next month.

Also seems best cheap oil is Pennzoil or Quaker, yes? Should I bother getting OEM filter?

Hey I'm kind of confused as to why some people were saying to go with the Royal Purple's HPS series over the normal oil. The back of the bottles I've been using say its SN/GF5. From reading the thread the HPS series is better due to increased detergent level so is the consensus that the regular oil is usable but the HPS would be preferable?

You'd need a uoa/voa to find out for sure, but I believe the additive packs on the HPS oils have higher detergent levels than the regular GF5 oils. I know they have more ZDDP.

From memory, the HPS oils are similar to the older RP API SL oils. When I did a google search, I found an older regular RP 5W20 that contained normal calcium levels and very high magnesium levels. Rotella T6 has very high magnesium levels as well.

You can also just email Royal Purple and tell them you want a higher detergent oil for E85. Although current API SN/GF5 oils are supposed to be better for E85 use.

Here are the responses I received when contacting Amsoil and Motul regarding the recommended oil for daily driving on E85:

Amsoil
"If you are using E85 fuels we would recommend using the original equipment 0W-20 because there is no extended drain with E85 fuels...if the OEM recommended interval is 7,500 miles, Amsoil Inc. recommends using our XL or OE line of products."

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=XLZQT-EA

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=OEZQT-EA

Don't know why the signature series wouldn't work as well here, may just be overkill I guess.

Motul
Per a phone conversation, 8100 Eco-Lite 0W-20 was recommended for daily driving w/ the occasional spirited canyon session, as 300V is typically overkill in that particular scenario since 300V is more so for racing applications.

Only problem with the Motul is that none of their 0W20 stuff is rated SN. I would use one of the Amsoil 0W20 products for a DD.
