I normally don't have a passenger so I've just kept the belt buckled permanently. Haven't actually tested this in a while. But I will report back later tonight

Yea, I thought about that, but then it doubles the cost in an accident when all those airbags on that side go off unnecessarily.

Of course, that could be a good thing when it counts towards being totaled!

I have my laptop (4.5lbs) in the passenger seat every day on my way to and from work. I've never heard any seat belt alarm go off.

Me neither, until I added a gallon of milk to the pile. It's weight but takes more than a point load. That's why it can't just be triggered with a push of the hand.

I was able to set the seatbelt alarm on or off by plugging my phone into the charger and unplugging while resting on the seat, 100%. I guess I will have to scratch that off my list

The gallon of milk falls under the "damp/liquid" category. it conducts electricity. Oh, and so does your hand, since its a body part which is what the system is designed to detect.

The seat belt sensor is definitely annoying.

How easily the plastics in the interior are scratched also sucks.

I don't "hate" anything about the car, I wouldn't have bought it if I did.

But...

I don't like the seats. I am broad in the shoulders (I lift 6 days a week) and the pronounced bolsters force my shoulders forward a bit uncomfortably.

I'm not terribly fond of the engine note, sounds a bit "rattley" at lower RPMs.

Minor things! Love the car!

I see so many cries of "it's underpowered!". One of the reasons I bought this car is because of fuel economy. For me this is the perfect blend of performance and day-to-day awesomeness.

Wasn't THAT long ago when people would gush over a car like the old Acura RSX-S, which had the same general specs (actually a tad slower, with less torque) as this car; 200hp, 2,700 lbs. More expensive too, even back in 2002.

Now everyone focuses on HP. If you're not passing 300, suddenly you're "weak"? Hogwash I say. Hogwash.

Milk is mostly water, which weighs about 8 1/2 pounds per gallon. A laptop weighs under five pounds typically. There has to be a lower threshold for the sensor; maybe it's five pounds?

The black stitching on the e-brake boot. Never noticed it until 2 weeks ago, and now it's all my eyes see!

Toyota puts money into designing a sound tube that I have to cover because it fatigues my ear on long drives, and then they say to the designer...

"We're trying to sell a low priced sports car, but we still want to make lots of money from it. So make a bunch of stupid omissions (no red stitching on e-brake boot in a car covered in red stitching, no arm rest, no rubberize trunk mat...) so that our OEM aftermarket parts will sell like hot cakes!"

I mean I'm pretty sure for the total cost of the "sound tube" (R&D), we could have had all three of the omissions listed above.

I'm starting to think Toyota is like Sony. They make great products AND stupid decisions.

You're dead on. You should see some of key details the engineers over-looked on the new Tundras.

I'm a loyal Toyota customer, but there are some aspects of all of their vehicles that make you say... "What the hell were they thinking?"

One last time....

It is not "weight" even though the owner's manual refers to it as a weight sensor. It is a sensor similar to the type used to measure body mass index where you hold or stand on two electrodes that send a light current through the body to determine its "mass" or in this case the amount of water in the occupant to help determine the occupant’s size and weight.

This is thrown off by the electrical current of charging a phone, or placing a large volume of liquid in the seat, which mimicks the profile of the minimum size person for the airbag (I believe it is a 100lb female, but not sure)

It is possible that the one in the FR-S uses some level of traditional weight sensing along with the field (there are hybrid systems), but if it were purely weight based, a cell phone would not set it off, and anything over the threshold (not just random specific items) should also set it off. Also, if purely weight based, there would most likely be a manual switch to turn off the airbag when there was a car seat and a child present (I believe).

Holy shit! <lightbulb> I'm an idiot!

edit: not only do I get it, I can draw you a rough schematic of how the system works. Old technology. Very very clever stuff.

Idk if the FR-S is the same, but the BRZ requires 3 button presses to honk (I assume the other 2 button presses are something specific).
