I can attest that 8k will get you far enough. Jason Ruggles placed 5th overall at nationals on that budget, and I doubt Annie Gill has 15k in the car

Yeah, I'm not quite looking to go to Nationals (at least not yet haha). Mainly looking to build a car that can be competitive regionally so I can have some fun and get myself near the top of the standings in my region.

Actually.. I am pretty sure Annie is north of 8k..the only reason I am at that level.. is that I have done everything to the letter of the rules... Brakes, diff, all the bushings..and some comfort and convenience items.as well as some of the labor.
I am sure 8k will get you a great start and be somewhat competitive nationally. .. I know Jason, Great Driver ... and not taking anything away from him.. Danny Kao in FR-Sarri, I know for a fact had about 14k of stuff done.. Max Hayter is in that neck of the woods too. Most people can probably get away with pad/lines/fluid for the brakes.. but I choose to get rid of the extra weight as well.. -35lbs for my brake upgrade over stock. so thats about 2-3k right there depending on which way you go. not trying to argue about it, just showing what a 'FULL Prep' car would cost.

then the 8k budget should be good ..
Concentrate on:
-suspension
-power
-handling/setup
-and reduce weight where you can

Good luck hope to see you out there.

Budget build that Lance Keeley and I (Bart Hockerman) had for 2013 Nats setup was as follows:

$1350 Feal Suspension 441 coilovers 7k front 6k rear swift springs
$1000 Enkei 17x9 RPF1's
$ 700 245-40-17 tires Dunlop Z2
$ 100 Nameless Track pipe muffler delete
$ 499 Nameless 2.5 inch over pipe/ high flow catted front pipe
$ 500 Ecutek Flash/tune
$ 270 Whiteline front sway bar 20mm adjustable ( lance ran the stock FSB)
$ 100 Kartboy lightweight pulley
______
$4519 Total build cost

This can build a competitive car for any region as long as you can drive well.

This is pretty much what I plan on doing for my build, just with SACHS coilovers instead of Feal. It will just be a slow one over time. Mainly looking to have fun and improve my driving skills, but I'd like to be competitive too. We'll see how it goes!

What Bart said listed would be a great start. I went close to all out with mine and I am a bit north of $10k The car got in the trophies and could have done better with better driving and more time on setup. On a regional level that list above and some seat time will be the biggest thing.

I'm at around 8k with my STX build. The car is way more competitive than I am as a driver. IMO its the most fun class you can run. Run CS and start collecting parts.

Or have self control and stay in CS.

Good luck.

My build so far, keeping in mind I made some bad choices for parts.

All values in CAD

$1000 Bilstein B8s
$350 RCE Yellows
$700 Raceseng CasCam plates
$250 SPC Rear LCAs
$400 Eibach Sway Bars
$2000 720Form GTF1s 17x9 with 255/40/17 Dunlop Z11s
$150 Greddy SP Elite Cat-Back
$1700 JDL Auto Design Header, Overpipe and Front Pipe
$130 Stoptech SPS Pads

Total $6700ish
I have other bling like Raceseng stuff that doesn't do anything for performance.

I'm quite sure that I wouldn't be nationally competitive regardless of modifications, but this is my budget STX build thus far.

Fortune Auto 500 (9k front and rear) - $1150
17x9 +35 RPF1s - $950
Used BFG Rivals 245/40/17 - $150
Borla UEL - $550
OFT - $500
Used Magnaflow Catback - $200
Alignment - $60

$3,560

When it comes to CS v STX, at least as it is local to me (Ohio Valley Region), the CS folks around here are very good. We ran a RWD Street PAX class, and I didn't sniff a trophy all year. At any given event, there were 30 in the class, and 10 of them were guaranteed to kick my ass. STX has fewer participants, and since going to STX (and modifying the vehicle) I have become faster, and more competitive. Not only am I faster than all of CS Toyobaru folks, I have placed higher in overall PAX as well.

I can't speak to how great my particular go-fast parts are, but they have made me go faster, and made me more competitive on a local level. The car is much more enjoyable to drive on the street as well.

do keep in mind that STX pax is much more favorable for overall than stock pax... hence the bump in competitiveness.

I am hoping this will be changed soon, or I might just jump into STX with nothing more 9" wheels and a flashtune to score better overall.

Hey Justin! I thought I recognized that screen name.

I was just about to say the same thing as him. I started out CS for one event then went to STX due to springs. I only have Eibach Pro-kits and Koni Yellows on stock Primacy's but it's been a fun season. I enjoyed being in STX because, like Justin said, there were less competitors, yet faster cars (allowing you to modify). At any given event at Ohio Valley Region (OVR), there were literally 8-12 86's and most of them were in the SR PAX class. That class was so competitive it was stupid. Really, I just did well in STX bc not many people were in it, and I only brought home 2nd for the season bc I showed up to every event.

While I did well in STX, almost everyone in an 86 was faster than me. Most had wheels/tires and more mods, but I do feel like keeping the car prepped for CS or SR would have pushed me to drive better. But I wanted the car lower, so I'm stuck with STX.

Also, one of the fastest cars out at OVR is an e36 4dr 325i that is an STX prepped car but runs PAX. The one thing I noticed about STX cars, versus higher class cars, is that they are always fast, whether it is dry or wet. Anything beyond a street tire class would drop off dramatically with bad track conditions, whereas I always felt the STX cars were some of the fastest, most consistent cars out there.

..... this is expected, as they are on street tires. Less susceptible to temperature drops and rain/puddles. No magic here.
