This could have been an important debut,

but instead it looks like a redneck's backyard project!

...now that iQ from the front looks proper! As good as a Mini or Fiat500 convertable!
I can picture a few girls in it!

Yeah they used that weak excuse to poo poo the hatch as well.

I'd disagree with that - having sunk in the bulk of the money for this car, and needing to rejuvenate its image more than Subaru does, I would say Toyota has more riding on the success of this car that Subaru does (which still has several sporty options in its stable).

according to TOP Gear, buy a roadster that is designed to be a roadster,

Your right, Almost as good.
when a coupe/sedan becomes a convertible, the designers will have to add more support to increase rigidity, and the mechanism for the roof which means more weight.

i think the the sketch is sexy as hell, but i will get the coupe.

Render in the first photo looks decent, but the one off custom looks horrible.

Judging from the cage on the side of the doors, i'm going to say the chassis is going to be as strong as wet noodles once the roof is chopped off. I wonder how much weight it would put on top of the GT86 to give it the stiffness it had before.

This car is going to be the worst. I hope they don't do this or high school girls will be driving these around.

They said they designed the car from the beginning as a convertible, so if they did there will be a convertible.

Toyota, Scion and Subaru needs a convertible that is RWD and bigger than a smallish miata. The problem is how much more will it weigh?

Lots of people here have never taken marketing and apparently it has not dawned on them that Toyota is well aware that there are more potential segments for this platform than the forum-going motoring enthusiast.

How will spawning a convertible variant of the platform be a bad thing? Toyota is down right clinical about the business viability of every project they undertake so any discussion about a convertible variant being a "bad" decision is just laughable.

They said something about the structure and it adds weight.

But then there is this. The Great Hatch vs Trunk Debate(poll).

I guess I'll keep waiting.

The one from the show was a 1off. They had a guy do a chop top for a marshal car to lead the parade b4 the grand pri in long beach this weekend. That is not what a convertible would look like if they went into production. This ifo came from jack Hollis ad a few of the other 20 people that actually work for scion lol. And yes scion consist of about 20 people total.
