Doing what the Japanese won't

Cosworth has released a new teaser video for their upcoming FA-20 performance packages.

Details are limited but Piston Heads points out the FA-20 name refers to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the Subaru BRZ.

Little else is known about the packages but the teaser video suggests we can expect a sports exhaust system and possibly a supercharger or turbocharger. The car has also been equipped with blue body stripes, a massive rear wing and plenty of Cosworth badging.

While nothing is official, the teaser video shows a Toyota GT 86 so it's likely the upgrades will also work on the other Toyotaru twins.

The performance packages are "coming soon," so expect to learn more details shortly.

Hmmmm... Curious about the wing. I want a Nur-Spec wing for my FR-S but importing would cost me an arm and a leg. A replica or something close could do if priced right.

Cosworth Scion FR-S & Subaru BRZ Is A 230 HP Tuner Car That Won't Void The Warranty

Cosworth has announced they're moving away from supplying individual parts and moving towards full tuning setups. Their objective is to become an approved upgrade partner for manufacturers, and the first in line is Subaru's FA20 engine with the Stage 1 Power Package, good for 230 horsepower. It features two 4" diagonally cut, branded, double wall tips and an "Y" shaped back muffler/silencer. In combination with the other components, this 304 stainless steel exhaust increases power output to 220bhp. By adding the optional combined overpipe front pipe with its spherical resonator, the new calibration power output is raised further to 225bhp. The black, thermally coated 4-2-1 manifold header option has equal length piping and CNC machined exhaust flanges, which helps to significantly reduce under hood/bonnet temperatures, boosting output with calibration to 230bhp while bringing a 22% weight reduction on the standard manifold.

If there's one brand with a bit of history when it comes to performance, it's Cosworth. So if the price is right, there are good times ahead of you Toyobaru lovers, good times indeed.

The Scion FR-S/Toyota GT 86/Subaru BRZ trio could do with a bit more power, and the rumors were true, Cosworth has a good solution.

The Stage 1 Power Package focuses on the exhaust system, but since all new parts have been developed with the FA20 engine platform in mind, the scalable approach means that additional packages can be added easily later on.

Cosworth went to Nameless Performance to build the parts, and offers a free flow system with their own calibration kit and low temperature thermostat for starters. Here's what they say about it:

Cosworth introduces their FA20 packages for the Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S & Subaru BRZ

Quote:
Can produce up to 380 bhp

Cosworth has introduced a variety of Power Packages for the Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ.

First up, the Stage 1 package has an optimized ECU, a stainless sports exhaust system and a "performance filtration solution." These changes enable the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to produce 220 bhp (164 kW) which is an increase of 23 bhp (17 kW). Customers can also order an optional front pipe, with a spherical resonator, which increases the output to 225 bhp (167 kW). The company also offers a performance manifold header that brings the total output to 230 bhp (171 kW).

Cosworth also mentioned some other packages which increase the output to 325 bhp (242 kW) and 380 bhp (283 kW) in "race track configuration" but unfortunately they declined to elaborate.

By no means is this a sure thing. Warranty coverage may never happen.
