Hmm. That's hard - it isn't really all that loaded with those options, but 11k is pretty low mileage. For that price though, you can get a higher-mileage (30-50k mile) '09 2.9L, which gets you more power and the newer engine, as well as the newer electronics. I'd probably go for that over an 11k mile '07 2.7.

Cayman S money. Nice mileage, but you can find a better deal with reasonably low mileage - not 11k low, but still 'low'. |

A friend of mine regularly tracks his Elise and we will be doing a K24 motor/Type R tranny swap into it this summer. It's going to be a beast!!!

06-07 cars have IMS bearing failure issues. I think the problem is a little exaggerated/overblown on the internet vs the actual total number of cars. 08+ cars do not have those issues due to a change in IMS bearing and block design.

I thought 2003+ IMS were updated and failed less, but you can always get a LN replacement bearing and put it in.

BRZ vs S2000 vs Cayman S (my take)
Quote:
Agreed. This is way WAY overhyped. If you do a search for documented cases of IMS failures for the Cayman you will find a handful at best. If the internet didn't exist nobody would even know the Cayman had an IMS. It's a much bigger problem for older Boxsters & 911's. In fact there was a class action lawsuit against Porsche for those models' engines, and you can bet those lawyers would have included Cayman owners if the case could be made for them. But there wasn't enough proof that it's a significant issue for the Cayman. Honestly, the best advice you can get for buying a Porsche is this: "buy the nicest S model you can afford." The base Cayman is still a nice car but for me, if I'm going to deal with the increased cost of owning a Porsche then I want increased performance as well. The base Cayman is no faster than an S2000. The bigger concern is if you track the car a lot. 987.1 cars are prone to oil starvation in high sustained lateral G corners, especially if you run R comp tires or slicks. This can be largely solved with an Accusump, but it's definitely something to be concerned about. This was also fixed in the 987.2 cars by changing the oil pickup system. They also sometimes need an upgraded air-oil separator or they can pull oil through the intake (again on high-g corners, especially with high engine vacuum). Finally, the 987.1 S engine may have issues with the rod bolts if you spend a lot of time right up near the redline (from what I've heard, the 2.7 isn't as prone to this, due to the lighter/smaller engine internals). Basically, the car is a very reliable car when used as a daily driver with occasional track/high performance driving, but it does need a couple of things if you want it to be reliable under heavy track use (from what I've heard at least). |
