home depot sells a metal mounting bracket for a 2.5lb extinguisher online for about $7. I ordered it, drilled a hole in the middle and attached it horizontally to the rear passenger seat bolt.

I lightened it up quite a bit. This was my first time machining anything, so it's sketchy. But the next step will be having a computer do this work for me much better than I can do.

I've already made a crappy looking bracket adapter that can fit 2 different fire extinguisher brackets (in case one of them doesn't pass tech inspection, for instance). I figured since I have that one and it works, I'll make the pretty one only accept the bracket I like better (the Allstar aluminum one). That way it can be lighter and sexier.

I spent the evening trying to turn this model into sensible toolpaths for the CNC mill. I'm making slow progress.

Still looks way overbuilt, but cool work!

Yes, it's a bit chunky. Hefty. Meaty. I don't know how they do this in the real world. I assume nowadays there are ways to test a part in a computer. You could simulate bolting the part on, simulate putting weight on it, simulate crash forces, and just build it up where it needs to be built up. For now I'm just determined to ensure that if that fire extinguisher gets ripped off of there in a crash, it won't be my part that failed--it will have ripped the heads off of those bolts instead.

The weight of the prototype isn't that bad now that it's been milled, and this one will be even lighter. Most of this model is 1/4" thick, which I decided to use because it's the same thickness as the mass-produced Allstar aluminum bracket that I am going to be attaching to it (and I figure they know what they are doing).

I could mill the other side, the top of it where the bolts will connect it to the handbrake (you're seeing the bottom in the pictures where you can see the milled-out pocket), and use shorter handbrake bolts. There are 2 reasons I'm not doing that. 1: Simplicity. It's easier to mill one side of a piece than it is to flip it and match it up perfectly and mill the other side, too. 2: Counterbalance. I think it will be good to have some weight over those mounting bolts, to act as a counterweight to the fire extinguisher.

Drill, pocket, profile

Simulated toolpaths. Yes, I've redesigned it again. It's gone on another diet. The next step is to actually put these toolpaths into the mill and see what happens.

Prototype 3: CNC machined!

My XYZ measurements were off but hey it's my first one and I was eyeballing it. And the holes are right, which is the most important thing if I want the thing to fit. The finish is rough. I like the look of it, but you can actually feel that texture, too, so I should improve that with less stepover (how far the tool moves each row that it cuts). Tomorrow I am taking a powdercoating class.

Relocating the stability control buttons, auxiliary audio input, and power outlet

Time for more rapid prototyping with Legos! Seems like these buttons should have been here in the first place.

Love the use of legos right next to milling and 3D printing. Maybe I should start a lego collection at the shop.

Panel virtual prototype

I imported an edited photo of the buttons into the modeling program to get the shape right. I will cut this out soon and see if everything fits. I expect not everything will fit perfectly, and I'll have to tweak it a little. Once I've done that, I'll make it pretty and red.
