I think that's around the max weight to offer the best agility and response to deal with various unsafe scenarios one would encounter at typical driving speeds. People would enjoy driving more, be more involved and aware, get better mileage, etc.
Curb weight of a 1st-gen Honda Civic ('72-'79) was around 1,530 lbs and could get around 40 MPG with a 50 HP engine. Interestingly enough, due to the weakening of suspension components when exposed to salt, people started watching out for "typical Honda rust" when buying them used. Honda reliability came much later.

IIRC in the late 80's Civic's we around 2,100 lbs.

I don't know how you could make a luxury sedan or luxury coupe under 2,500 lbs. with all the safety requirements we have and still make them cheap. How would you propose we do such a thing?

I dont care about performance. The look of the new Mustang is a No go for me, compare to the FRS

So you've seen the new Mustang? Because pretty much no one else has, except for some Ford employees working on the Mustang project, and a few industry insiders who have been sworn to secrecy and were not allowed to photograph what they saw. Everything you have seen so far are just guesses, artist's renderings, and heavily camo'ed test mules.

And there are TONS of renderings out there. This one is my favorite so far:

Too bad it will never look like that.

That is awesome looking.. The renderings I posted earlier in the thread are baed on the spyphotos that were taken, and if the rumors are true, should be pretty close to the real deal.

Boring... I live your much better

Is it just me or does this body design look a bit like an Aston Martin?

It does look like AM. You r not alone, and the Camaro is all about Number, its agility is off the chart. Hopefully Mustang will do better, but for god sake, please make it a Muscle Classic with some Modern look. Do not adapt to the Japanese and Europe look too much, then it is no longer a Mustang.

I hope they make it a close retro-styled '68 fastback that has IRS, weighs 400lbs less and has more HP...that'd be a win for everyone

This back end is just pure sexiness, but that's IMO of course

Mustangs would be cool...if everyone on the block didn't have them.

Yeah your GT500 is cool, but the hairdresser down the street's V6 drop-top looks almost identical.
