Me too. I doubt I will buy a sedan version unless I really get desperate.

I have to agree with this. I have been a "more power" drum beater for a while now, but I'm over it. I just need an FR-S that is slightly bigger (again, a hatch version of the current car would be enough) and I'll take care of the rest.

With that said, I could see myself buying a hybrid version of this larger car as long as it's still RWD.

Maybe Toyota should build a larger version with the current engine and keep that car under $30k while the faster and better equipped hybrid version would be just under $35k.

If they go the same route as the Yaris Hybrid-R then I'm thinking it will be available in both body styles although it will be an upgraded version of the current combustion engine (to approximately 250 bhp?) feeding the rear wheels with electric motors giving a 60-100 bhp boost to the front wheels when required.

It will be a challenge for them to develop and fit the extra hardware for a reasonable price whilst still retaining the handling qualities.

I forgot to comment on this - I can't agree enough. A cheap, light RWD platform is always a good thing, spread it around!! It will be better for car guys and it will make more profits for Toyota, win-win.

It's like the guys who bitch about Porsche selling SUVs and a sedan - that 911, and it's 13 versions, are still available and better than ever. Also, according to the Porsche, it's only available due to profits from the SUVs.

You could always learn how to drive the car well despite it's "lack" of power. You can always tell the people on two wheels who's only solution to a problem is HP, and they are usually behind you.

I understood and understand the philosophy perfectly fine. I didn't buy this car to win street light battles. However, this is a sports car... there's no reason that this car couldn't have more horsepower. Most of the old school Jap cars that I loved from back in the day came with an N/A model and a Turbo model; 3000 GT, 300ZX, Supra, etc. Why didn't they apply that philosophy here? This is a Subaru engine... a company that specializes in turbocharging boxer engines.

And trust me, I will be adding the power myself. It still would have been nice if it would have come with a tiny twin scroll and internals meant for boost though... the cost of the car would have gone up, but the cost to mod it would have gone down significantly.

EDIT: Also, I'm not complaining about the lack of power. I think the car has plenty of power for daily driving. I love my car, and there isn't any other (new) car on the market I would rather buy for similar cost. Regardless, that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy having more power. Despite how much speed this car can carry through the turns, it still feels good to accelerate quickly during corner exits and on straigh-aways.

There would be no headroom in the back, unfortunately.

I just don't see the market for this. I'm guessing this rumor never comes to fruition.

Will, buy. Family man needs a cheap 4 Door Sports Car. Thank you Toyota.

And people if you want more power add it yourself. Seriously, or indulge in the other perfectly fine RWD Sport Coupes out there.

EDIT: And lol at people saying there is not a market. -__-

The thing is, all of our responses in this thread are all pretty biased. However, Toyota/Subaru already sold these to us. The car appealed to us, and we bought it. Not everyone in the world who's in the market for a new car wants one.

Go read the comments section on articles or videos related to the FRS/BRZ/GT86. The biggest turn off for most people is not the lack of a drop-top, and it's not a lack of 2 extra doors either. Nope. It's a lack of power. "Mod it yourself" applies just fine to those of us who already purchased one... the ones that already bought one, and are more than likely not in the market to go buy another one. If this car came with the standard 200 HP N/A version AND a more expensive less fuel efficient 300 HP Turbo version... the sales for this car would skyrocket even more. I can't see a sedan doing as much for sales as a turbo would, and a convertible would bring in even less.

Most people in the market for a sports car are looking for a fast car. They may not necessarily be looking for the best 0-60 and 1/4 times of all available cars out there, but those are the easiest benchmarks to go by on paper for someone shopping for a sports car. Other factors obviously come into play, such as weight, handling, and styling. This car nails the latter three, and were more important than power for every one of us who bought one. However, there are a great deal of people out there that like the car, but would not buy one because of the lack of power. You toss on a turbo and bump that up to 300 HP? I'd wager that Toyota/Subaru would easily double their sales... and that's a conservative estimate.

I hope this comes out as an FR-S baddged car with either a bigger displacement engine or possibky the turbo FA20 from the Forrester.

Reason: If its badged as an FR-S we can use the new engines to swap. And if its turbo from factory or if its a 2.5 version even better for us early adopters.

The new IS is a damn nice looking car. And the new Corolla is nice for its segment. For that reason I am wondering about the viability of small RWD sedan for Toyota in North America.

A shooting brake (hatchback) will absolutely weigh more than a couple.

Voice of reason speaking here.
