I've got the Nameless Performance catback with high flow cat. I love it. When the car is cold, it's really loud, but after about 30 seconds or so, it quiets down.

(cost of car - trade-in) * 7% = tax
I heard registration is whats going to get me. Im in the military but from what ive been told it will be like 2,000 just for registration alone. i dont have a trade in. I was just going to buy the car for 27,800 out the door. Then pay taxes and registration because im getting it from a different state. Thank you guys you have been a great help.

The only way the registration should be that much is if they are including the 7% in the registration cost. Technically that is part of the registration in Georgia now. Regardless of where you buy the car (dealer, private seller, new, used) you pay 7%. This replaced the previous cheap registration and annual "birthday present" ad valorum tax.

If you buy from out of state (and live in GA), then you are REQUIRED to pay ALL the 7% tax when you register it at your local DMV.. so yes, essentially you're gonna pay ~$2,000 when you register your car.

Buying a car from an in-state dealership, you might have the option to include the taxes in the total amount financed.. if you go that route, then you WON'T have to pay ~$2,000 at the DMV registration. Regardless, it's still a 7% tax you're gonna pay now or later.

Thats what im getting at, TAX and REGISTRATION will roughly be 2,000 but not more then 3,000. If i was to buy it for 28,000.
The thing that gets me is how much or how do they find how much to charge for registration.

It's not that complicated.. there's only TWO things you pay during the DMV registration:
1. A flat fee of $20 for the TAG.
2. 7% tax of the "fair market value" OR the retail selling price, whichever is greater.
3. Add those 2 together, and you got your total.. $20 + (0.07 x $28K)

Georgia changed all the registration stuff starting this year. You now pay a 6.5% fee and no longer pay an ad valorem tax. Technically the new fee is not a sales tax.

The fee goes up to 6.75% next year and then 7% in 2015.

Thy recoup the lost ad valorem revenue by making people pay the fee on used car transactions and charging it on people coming into the state.

Glad I looked at the new registration law again after your post. Originally to opt-in to the new system to not have to pay ad valorem anymore you had to have purchased your car in Georgia. A few months later they changed it and now it applies to a vehicle purchased anywhere and registered in Georgia. I purchased my car in MA and had it shipped here. Will save me a couple thousand dollars if I keep my car for the next 4-5 years.

this whole thing is kinda crap for us active duty military members cuz we never had to pay the ad valorem tax. and now, even thought we are not residents of Ga we have to pay a 7% tax that has taken the place of the AV tax we never had to pay...
