Another "help me decide!" thread - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I really hate to start another one of these threads but hopefully itll be cut and dry, there is just so damn much info out there I need to be reassured. Recommendations?

General info:
-Car will spend very very little time on track, I'm looking mainly to retain close to OEM ride quality but pickup a little bit of cornering performance for canyon type runs.
-225/45R17 Potenza RE760 on 17x8 +35 wheels
-Close to stock power output, will be UEL stage two soon
-FT86SF Strut tower bar will be going on soon

What I'm looking for:
- between 10-20mm drop (just enough to take out a little bit of wheel gap)
-I would like to get a coilover that will allow me to retain the stock ride height comfortably if needed. (not sure if this is even an issue?)
-I feel like the stock suspension "feels" pretty good, but I'd be okay if the ride was a hair more firm.
-Wouldn't mind losing a little bit of body roll.
-I do not want to exceed $1,500 for the set.
-I would like to get coils that come with camber plates, but not a deal breaker.

What I'm thinking:
-KW V1
-ST or ST TA
-Tein Street Flex
-RCE Tarmac 0
-Fortune Auto? (I'm not very familiar)

Tein Street Flex if not then RCE Tarmac Zero. The reason behind why I decided these two for you, is mainly due to your set-up. You want stock-like feeling, you won't get that with any coilover that is after market if you do the drop you've suggested.

However, I am in your position and I know you are looking for a comfortable ride or as you mentioned stock like.

Thus, first choice: Tein
Second: RCE Tarmac Zero

I'm not sure that you need coilovers. Good springs (RCE Yellow have a 20mm drop) with good shocks (Bilstein B6 or Koni Yellow) would be a good fit for you. Quiet, long lasting, rebuildable, good ride and good handling. Easy. Add camber plates if you need the camber. If you're not spending a lot of time on the track and don't want to go lower than 20mm, plus you're on street tires...just a good set of springs will work well for you.

IMO sounds like the stock car is fine for you, maybe add wheels and tires and be done. How is that for "OEM reliability"?

I think you should attend 1 track day stock and see what you think.

Spending a couple thousand for suspension wheels and tires and you are only driving on street and probably will almost never push it past what OEM could do, seems wasteful.

I thought about this too. I just wanted to have the ride height adjustability really.

I'm already on the wheels and tires, and I do like it how it is. The car is as much a toy to me as it is my DD though, so I don't mind spending a little if it's worth it.

How do you think I arrived at those choices without the search function...
Notice they're all pretty similar, just looking for some opinionsfrom some qualified people, not looking necessarily for right/wrong.

why do you want coilovers? why not springs/shocks?
springs/shocks might do what you need. I like rce's suggestion. rce springs, and bilstein b6 or koni yellows.

I had similar needs from my suspension set up as you and opted for the ST's (also helped that there was a rebate on them as well

). Ride feels similar to stock but a tad bit stiffer, still very comfortable. The car is dropped maybe 1-1.2 ish inches, did not take exact measurements but the wheel gap on stock is mostly gone. Overall I am very satisfied with them as they suited my needs very well.

From your OP, it sounds like you want the OEM+ ride.

They are all pretty similar. Heres the similarity; 90% of people ask for what your asking for. Coilover systems arent released like candy so the answer will be the same as last week which is the same as last month which was the same as the last 6 months. Its the same selection then as it is now.
