Upgrade? You mean downgrade, right? Blue lights = rice IMO. Less functional and ugly.

Lol you can see the reduced output. NOT an upgrade.
This is why aftermarket hid bulbs are crap. If you want bright you buy name brand stuff. |

Regardless of peoples choices on aftermarket bulbs, this video should prove to be helpful for those just wanting to replace their stock bulbs when the time comes or for those that want to upgrade if they choose to do so.
That's what I got from the video, hopefully it will be helpful to others...

Ok, watched the full vid ( turned it off after seeing the output shots earlier).
He's 100% wrong on the color band (needing higher kelvin to get more color in the band) and that the blue color of the main part of the beam is caused from the projector and that it wouldn't be that way in a reflector housing. He's also wrong on saying blue is "modern" as nothing comes with a 6K bulb from the factory, and anything of that general color range is an old HID bulb that's color shifted (i.e. not modern but old and busted) Just lots of fail all around (god, even the alignment of those bulbs is off as you can see the output WAS changed with the cutoff). Want a more pure, white light? Buy a D2S ballast, buy a set of CBI's, notch the base so it fits in the headlight correctly and presto. Or just be happy with the factory setup and wait for them to color shift a little (doesn't take long for the yellow part to go away and to go completely white). |

Some cars do come from the factory with higher Kelvin bulbs than 4300K. Most notably are the newer Audis, Mercedes, and BMWs that come equipped with CBIs. Then there are the LED headlights that are ~5000-6000K. Those don't put out too much light, though, compared to their HID counterparts. |

Keep in mind D4S is higher kelvin than 4300K, but just how much is open for debate (some specs say a lot, some say a little). Seen the same issue on how many lumens the D4S actually puts out as well. I've heard reports that Mercedes uses CBI's, but never seen any real proof. They're the only ones that "officially" use them, but US spec cars are likely different (CBI was originally European only and their cost was crazy because of this). |
