OEM U Joint Feel

I am doing the clutch and swapping the rear diff on my car. Noticed when I dropped out the driveshaft that the u-joints feel odd. They have a consistent notchiness to them. Has anyone else recently had one out and noticed this?

Nope. When I did my TOB the drive shaft u-joint was as stiff as morning wood.

Kinda what I was expecting to hear. Figured firm would be okay, notchy is no good. Guess I will be next day airing a driveshaft tomorrow at 300 in shipping

Just because it's notchy doesn't mean it's dead.
Wait a while, drive like a grandma. If your going to spend that much might as well get a carbon fiber or aluminum drive shaft.

Hell, call me Susan piss on me beat me, but I'm pretty sure you can just buy a new u-joint. Not sure cause I'm in a strip club and can't look up shit at the moment, but look into that.

Hell might be worth $100 only.

I have a track day on wednesday and one this weekend. The wednesday event is past the cutoff for being refundable. It's an aluminum one piece I am ordering. No time to get it done during the week unfortunately.

You can always rent a sports car and beat the shit out of it.

A buddy of did that when his MR2 was overheating and a non refundable track day at laguna seca. Back in the day enterprise had a Camero he got that.

I dropped the shaft to swap Diff and noticed only the joints at ends of shaft are tight and very "notchy". I can feel it moving over every needle roller as if there's no grease in it. My immediate thought is they need replaced. The center joints are fine. This is on a 2013 with ~60k.
I happen to have a spare shaft off a 2015 car with about same miles and it feels exactly the same. So now I'm not sure, maybe this is normal or do the end joints do this after this amount of time and wear (no way to grease them) so they really do need replaced?

It's normal. I bought another used drive shaft and a new OEM one and they feel the same. I think as long as there is no grittiness to it and no play it is okay.

I appreciate you sharing that. Considering your experience and the fact I have two that are similar, I have to agree... its normal. Its just that from my experience with other vehicles it feels very much like a joint that should be replaced.

I know exactly how you feel and even panic bought a new driveshaft because of it. It feels what you would traditionally consider bad.
