What this car does
I've been working for six weeks to accurately describe what this car does. The best I can describe it is the FRS gets out of my way.
In previous cars, I drive the car down the road. In the FRS I drive the road. Because it has such immediate feedback, responds to inputs so quickly and accurately, and has an almost intuitive feel, it sort of becomes invisible, and "gives" me the road. Me v. the road, without the car lawyering-up the experience. I hope this makes sense to some of you. |

Great way to describe it. I agree with you completely. I'm a driver, not an machine operator.

I agree, very few people in the world know what that means. A lot of them are now FRS/BRZ owners.

Interesting thoughts.
Toyota UK ran a little competition, the winners of which would get to drive a GT86 up the hill at Goodwood. You had to "Tell us what real driving means to you in 86 characters" I was trying to capture exactly what you describe, the moments when the car itself fades away, and it's just you and the road. It's a bit like skiing, or mountain biking on a good descent. I was actually remembering nine years ago, driving a normally aspirated Silvia S13 down the touge, chasing a friendly local hashiriya in his R32, which was when I most clearly felt this feeling: I fly down the road, reading and tracing its ebb and flow; the car dissolves around me Anyway, I didn't win, but this is just a long-winded way of saying that I know what you mean

Tracked ours for the first time last week. After 38 years of racing in everything from Karts to Stock Cars to Touring/Sports Cars our FRS put a huge grin on my face for almost 100 incredible miles.
The number of cars I have experienced on track over the years actually humble me when I think about them. Let's just say I've been fortunate enough to experience several lifetimes worth of cars and driving/racing has never gotten old. A few cars that give me the same feeling are the 355 Ferrari, All manner of Cayman and Boxster, ANY S2000, 996/997/991's. They are all wonderful cars in their own ways. Sure the FRS can't match any of those in a straight line, but when I get to a corner it does exactly what I ask of it and for me that is the ultimate feeling behind the wheel. Sean |
