He also said that an R version of the FT-86 was coming with less weight, Brembo brakes (our test car’s stoppers were from Hitachi), a rollcage, a larger rear wing, no rear seats and, yes, a mechanical LSD but no more power.

I would rather have rear seats and more power. Not interested in a rollcage. Undecided about the wing. Lighter and Brembo brakes would be cool though.

regards the "r" version - rollcage is do-able, at least in europe anyway...



the renault megane r26r, had back seats removed, roll cage, light buckets, and plastic windows - fastest FWD production car around the ring i beleive

I have an idea. When the FRS finally comes out, NOBODY should buy it for few months. Then they will drop the price, or offer incentives. Who's with me?

Any thoughts on the lack of boxer burble sound? I'm really hoping the brz has the trade mark boxer sound. This would be a great way to differentiate the two models

So they can determine it was a failure and never improve the car and discontinue it after the first generation?

Even if the FR-S "R" version has the roll-cage (which I highly doubt, but who knows), they will charge you more for the breaks, etc. than if you buy them (or even better parts) elsewhere and either DIY or go to a shop and get it done on your normal FR-S. Even if you don't want to go aftermarket and prefer to buy the official toyota parts, it will still be cheaper (and more fun) to do the latter. Also it will be customizable to your liking, not a preset package.

And don't forget that the "race ready" version comes with the "race ready" insurance price (no more 2+2, etc.)... That kind of takes away the point of making it affordable. To each their own, but I will most likely be going with the regular version and add things I want later.

The R sounds like it would be a package deal rather than an add on item.

Do really see a version of this car in the U.S. with a roll cage? It just doesn't fit with Scion, though I'm not saying it's totally not possible just not likely. Besides that, is there proof that an "R" version exist besides this article?

lol my guess is if we tried that and the sales sucked than toyota would chock it up as another "halo" vehicle. and discontinue or atleast shorten its life span

Well I will never, ever buy a car without test driving one first, so I guess I won't get one of the first ones in the area. Hopefully someone will buy one and come to an autocross and I'll borrow it for a run
