12hrs isn’t bad. That’s about the drive from my place to LA. I did that twice a year. I even drive to Seattle, but that broken down to 2 days cuz I had a friend who didn’t want to do 15hr drive straight.

The first time I went to NC, we did it on my old Mazda 3 MT. Drive over there wasn't terrible, split in 2 days. Drive back was miserable, once we hit Delaware and NY my left foot was almost cramping. Second time was done non stop both ways, but on the AT Mazda. Way more comfortable and I left most of the drive to C.C. I know the wife says I can drive whatever I prefer, but I know deep down she's hoping is not the BRZ, I've never driven it for longer than 2 hours. So it will be interesting how 6-6 and 12 hours feel like. My main concern is the MPG, it gets cheaper the further south we get, just don't want to be stopping 4-5 times on a drive that would usually only take me 2 stops on the AT Mazda. |

I do the 650 miles from my house to my mom's in SJ a few times a year usually in one drive. I can do it in 10 hours, but sometimes turn it into 11-12 hours with rest stops. I like to leave at 3-4 am. Early morning miles just seem to be easier and go by quicker for me.

Took about 10 hours. I didn't mind it at all and was quite comfy. Only had to fill up 3 times so mileage wasn't a big issue. The wife would have despised it! Mind you she didn't think the Outback was big enough to be comfortable either though.

Exactly, I like to leave by 0530AM to miss the NY/NJ traffic and maybe hopefully the Delaware one. Maryland is not terrible. Virginia on the other hand, fck Virginia. Not only there is an insane amount of traffic, you really have to watch for posted speed limits. Quote:
3 stops I can go with. You should get her to ride in a HMMWV, that way she'll never mention a vehicle not being big enough as a measure of comfort. |

Just scanning through my fuel log, I've done about 9 trips that were between 500 and 800 miles in one day. I have many more that were between 200 and 400 miles in a day.
I've enjoyed every one of them and wouldn't hesitate to to it again. Some were solo, some were with a passenger. On solo trips, I only stop for fuel and the occasional rest area. "Meals" are grabbed when getting fuel. So, nearly all the time is spent in the car. With a passenger there is usually at least one, if not two, meal stops of 45 minutes or more.

I have to admit I do occasionally "allow" myself to check out roadside stands and some local fare even when solo driving (that covers "rest stops). I also try to avoid Interstates if I'm not in a rush particularly in relatively scenic areas.

Pretty sure that @Ultramaroon was getting sick of the place by his house since I just kept wanting to go back all the time. Speaking of that trip, I think we spent more time in his car than out of it!

I did drive the Lotus from Seattle to San Jose. It is actually pretty comfy once you are in, and gets crazy good gas mileage cruising the speed limit on the highway. Only problem is no cruise controll.
Solo or otherwise, I too have always been hard charging. Pack food and drinks, stop to gas and bathroom only. I've actually done Boise-San Jose in under 9 hours. But the last couple years I'm like, I don't have to go to work on Monday. |
