Just use a belt (like the kind you wear). Wrap it around the filter, through the buckle, then reverse the direction of the wrap and pull hard. Same concept as starting a push mower.

If the filter is cool, wrap a wide rubber band on it for better grip. Works especially well when the oil filter is sitting straight up.

So... when I remove the filter, what kind of spillage should I be prepared for? It's been a couple days since I looked at it, is there a tray to catch most of the oil that spills out? I'm not exactly excited to dump oil all over the top of our ~300 mile engine, haha.

get the proper tool/tools and get it off the right way. you dont want to be stuck with a swiss cheesed oil filter after the screwdriver method failed you and can no longer drive to the store. if you are going to be changing your own oil, a $5 investment is worth it to do it right every time.

Never do this. If the filter truly is stuck (it does happen), you'll be paying for a tow truck to brink your car in for service. If you can't get the filter off with a strap, there's a problem.

Do the Subie's get free oil changes for the first 35k miles like the FR-S? If so, have the dealer change it for you?

Why not ? I've done it in the past with no problems when I had no tools to remove the oil filter.
