jsooke, are you an officer of the club you were running with?
Were you, yourself, involved in the design of the course that you ran that day? If you were not involved in the course design, then were you in any way officially involved in approving that design? If so, well … And if any of the above is true, you have some other things to ponder. Such as what if a newbie had run, flipped, broken his neck on that embankment, and faced a lifetime of paralysis? Do you reckon you’d be responsible for that? Not even a little? |

He also is an adult. He has to make the final choice to run the course or not. He had plenty of time to walk it. He did not have to run if he felt it was un-safe. However 1 accident a year seems pretty high.... in the last 3 years the most we have had was last event of the year a 350z's wheel broke off from the hub.

Legally none of that matters. People rarely think of the bad things that could happen because they usually don't. The organizers SHOULD ALWAYS think of the bad things that could happen.

Accidents do happen but are usually due to gross inexperience/driver error but thanks to the slower speeds, the damage is seldom serious. Incidentally, I agree 100% with Dave, that slalom section was WAY too fast for that narrow of an area. If your organization had no choice but to run drivers through there, they should have added a feature to slow it down. But that's just from Captain Hindsight so its basically a moot point now. Scott

Make the vid public. At least for the understanding of others who set up courses and to those who haven't really taken the time or have the desire to understand how an autocross may have potential dangers. No public video, then close thread, or take it pm.

I raced from the age of 36 until I was 42. I crashed three times during that period. My worst injury was a broken finger. In two of the crashes course design could have been a contributing factor but my driving was the core factor. Any time you compete in motorsports, you run the risk of a crash, possible injury or even death. You should take the responsibility of your safety upon yourself. If the venue is unsafe then refuse to run until the problems are corrected or accept the consequences of the worse case scenario. The OP sounds like he is of like mind and I applaud his integrity. Hopefully, he and the club will learn from this incident and make corrections to prevent a re-occurance. Unnecessary litigation will do nothing but damage the sport and further limit the opportunities to test the limits of the driver and the machine in a controlled (and hopefully safer) setting.

Interesting discussion. I am not a club officer nor do I design the courses; but I am quite involved in the club and we are all good friends. The club will be looking again at the safety requirements, now that they have some video to review as well. We do know that it is not the safest environment for AutoX, but always trying to make the best of a difficult venue.
I will not be suing the club ... not an option I am willing to pursue for a slew of reasons. I know the risks I am taking at these venues. At this time the video is staying private; I was looking more for direction on what happened and most of the descriptions here are what I thought to have happened as well. I placed it in private on my own decision after seeing the discussions here related to the venue (not my driving, I take constructive criticism well ... I am not the best driver by any means!). I will review my decision after some more thought. And that incident of the people crossing the track has been taken care of by the club. Not acceptable by any means. Sorry for the teaser. Jay

Can someone describe what happened in the video for all of us who were too slow? From the comments, I'm guessing he understeered into a wall?

Earthen embankment along the right side of the track. The car hit it, rode up it and then did a slow roll over to the left onto its roof.
