haha yea never mind that. Just checked registration and that shows Toyota.

Here we go again with the speeding preachers, "you put peoples lives in danger". Sometimes it is safe to drive 100 in a 40. Just depends on what is going on at that road, at that particular time. Speed signs make city money, not to save lives(look at other countries). Sure in a rural area, where kids play you wouldn't want to push it. Common sense people. I can show you any stetch of road and bank money EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU GO OVER THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT AT ONE POINT DURING EVERY DAY. So, stop the "peoples lives are in danger" crap and look in mirror, just due to the fact you go over limit by 5mph on the crowded freeway, is no better than somebody revving an empty strecth of road. Do not even try to lie that you and 99% of the rest of you do not.
America is turning into the land of cry babies. The term "idiot" is bit much, you should apologize the the original poster.

Drifting around the speed limit by 5+ is one thing. It's another thing to double the speed limit. To defend this is laughable.

Speed doesn't kill, but great differences in speed does. That's why we have speed limits - to keep everyone within the same realm of speed. If everyone is driving approximately the same speed, then minor differences in speed can be adjusted within a reasonable amount of time and accidents are more easily avoided. If traffic flow is more consistent, it's also easier to judge intersections.

Speed also reduces reaction distance, and plays a huge part in if a car is able to navigate situations after that reaction distance is used up.

You seem to indicate that countries without speed limits have fewer crashes and safer roads. Source please.

For those that live in nyc, it was going towards the BQE, so all I needed to do was step on 3rd gear a little harder than usual since it was just a long straight, and next thing I know i was already doing 85. I let off the gas and by that time I already saw the cop

Never expected it to be a 40mph zone and coming off the jersey turnpike didn't help =/
lol, I know how you feel. The main thing is does your ticket say 85 in 40?

The Whitestone is actually 30 mph which is pretty ridiculous. I got pulled similar to you but the guy let me go, not sure why guess he was having a good day.

LOL, similar to my experience. 170km in a 60 with a rented Challenger. Cop flat out asked me if I was mentally stable. Ended up with a 79 in a 60 ticket. There were no other cars around as it was a long stretch of local country road. Apparently them coppers like hiding in corn fields around my parts. I must say though, I've learned my lesson....always watch out for corn fields!

Lol yeah I got out of it because the cop was so heated in teaching me a lesson that he forgot to cite me xD

RADAR works just as well while moving as it does while stationary.

Target speed = closing speed minus patrol speed

Sorry bud. No gettin out of this one.

Oh, and don't think you're done yet - 6 points within 18 months in NY triggers the Driver Responsibility Assessment. You will be levied a fee of $100 each year for three years for 6 points. Each additional point is another $25. You're now facing $450 extra in fines over the next 3 years, on top of whatever your ticket fine was (at least $360).

New York state has some of the harshest fines out there. Probably second only to California.

Edit - I thought your violation was 80 in a 40, I see it's 85 in a 40. That's an 11 point hit, automatic license suspension, $225 Driver Responsibility Assessment each year for 3 years.

Unless the Cop wrote you up for a lesser violation, you shouldn't even have your license right now. I guess it'll probably get suspended when you go to court. Not sure if lawyering up will help you plea the violation down or not.
I thought over 120 was automatic suspension in NY, not 85? If so...well everyone getting speed tickets would have lost their license.

You confuse me!

11 points within 18 months is a suspend.

41+ over speed limit is a one shot 11 point violation.

85 in a 40 is 45 over.

Therefore, suspension.

This would be my first speeding violation in 7 years of driving so maybe the judge will let me off the hook with something less severe. Family lawyer said to plea not guilty on the fine and will handle the rest lol. I'll see what happens and keep you guys updated.

On a side note, for people familiar with NYC, I got off the whitestone bridge yesterday and was heading back into Queens (for those of you not familiar - this is pretty much a 3 lane highway and is a straight shoot), and noticed for the FIRST time that the speed limit here is 30MPH. I take this bridge everyday and just noticed it for the first time since I'm a little paranoid now. I was just cruising with the rest of the crowd and already doing 50-55mph, and this was during rush hour.

Obviously there were some speedsters doing 60+ and was around 530pm. I know for a fact I have done even more just because I want to push the throttle and hear the engine scream a little bit, but never in excess, but this was only late at night with much less cars on the road. I'm sure 98% of the cars are doing at least 60+ whenever it is after 9pm on these roads.

Not trying to troll or anything but doesn't this show that there is something seriously wrong with the speed limits on certain roads.... like the triborough bridge hahah.

Don't worry if you're doing what the rest of the crowd is doing. I'd only be cautious not to go over the speed limit when there is no crowd, or if you're well over what the crowd is doing.

Definitely keep us updated. Good luck to you and your lawyer - I've never heard of anyone plea down an 11 point violation before, not saying it can't be done, I just don't know of anyone who has succeeded, so I hope you become the first!
