You could live near Alaska and drive all the way to Niagra Falls to buy a car and still save money.

Thats an $11k difference. It just doesn't add up.

It's because the Canadian arms of all the car companies bitch that since we only have about 10% the population of the US, that amounts to only approx 10% the total customer base, hence why they jack up the price of each unit. Understand that when our dollar was worth about 63-75 cents US (and it was this way for over a decade) they could get away with it, since Canadians couldn't exercise any buying power in the US with such a shitty dollar.

However, due to the recent near-parity between the US and CDN dollar over the past 2 years, the car companies have felt the heat as Canadian consumers took their strong dollar and bought their cars in the US, then went through the legal process to bring them to Canada, still saving a huge amount of money. The companies then went ahead and tried to screw the consumer by saying cars purchased in the US would have any existing warranty voided once registered in Canada. There is now a class-action lawsuit against these greedy swine.

At the same time that the companies went ahead with this sleazy method of screwing Canadians (again), they tried damage control by "dropping" their prices... but it still didn't reflect the parity between the CDN and US dollar. So fuck them. I hope they choke on this class-action suit.

FYI, it wasn't just the S2000. The STI used to cost 50k, as did the 350Z. Hell, even a WRX was 35k! Now, with the "new" prices, an STI costs about 41K, and a 370Z is about the same.

It should be noted that sales volume is a legitimate concern when it comes to pricing.

The more volume you can sell, the more you can curb fixed production costs and lower the price of the commodity, while retaining a respectable profit margin.

Other things to consider:
Government Tariffs
Country specific safety/emission standards (that deviate from the standards of cars sold in bigger markets)
Cost of physical importation
Exchange rates
Corporate Income tax rates
Government Tax Credits
etc.

All effect a companies bottom-line when operating in a foreign country.

I'm not defending the car companies, but I won't completely demonize them without knowing all the facts.

Canada and the US have supposed "free trade." Here the Canadian consumers are exercising their rights to that free trade and car companies are taking away product warranties as a way to keep 'em in line.

I've been living with this crap for most of my life. I can understand you wanting to get more info on this, but trust me when I say this is pure greed and these fuckers need to be shot.
