That sucks for Honda Fit tuners. As long as they leave their K series alone, I doubt anyone will really care what they do with the rest of their lineup, ECU accessibility wise.

As for Subaru reliability, I've mostly heard good things about the N/A Subaru Boxers, especially the older ones that have hundreds of thousands of miles. Many of the older generation engines that I've seen were still going well past 200K miles.
When you say 'firewall' are we talking about something that blocks a reflash only (like the COBB)? Because that's not so bad, when there are tools like greddy eManage Ultimate, or AEM's fuel and spark controller. These are more traditional signal intercept-type piggybacks. They require a bit more work with wiring and map lines and such, but that hopefully scares off the retards that just jack up the boost on their STIs and leave stock fueling...

Yes, I believe so.

It does mean more work, like you said, and if it fixes or helps the WRX/STI reliability issues than it might be the future of ECUs .

The extra work is no big deal, piggyback tuning has been around forever. But like I said, it's one thing to follow instructions and know about splicing wires, and which lines to T off of, etc... then make your fuel, ignition, boost, ect... adjustments, and another to plug in a magic hand-held computer to a slot in your dash and select 'MOAR BOOSTS!!!' And then re-flash it back to 'stock' for warranty after pistons blow up...
