Can't have all the chassis been stiff. Need to have flexible area to release/damper the shocks.

Good to know. Thanks.

I disagree. Chassis needs to be as stiff as possible so it doesn't interfere with the chosen spring rates (by being a random spring itself) and so the control arm mounting points don't move, interfering with the motion that the engineers try to design.

It's most likely the same reason why crankshafts are flexible. It will absorb accelerations better. The same strength crank that is stiff would actually be brittle and problem prone. Engine manufactures can run a flexible crank then a more expensive high strength stiff crank given the design tolerances.

I will say that the crankshafts doesn't have the same flexibility as a wet spaghetti noodle, but it is present and purposely designed into mass produced engines.

Now don't throw a rod into this convo. It's just getting good.

I would since every car was not affected and many forums blow things out of proportion as those affected tend to be the vocal minority and make the loudest stink and those with no issues hardly speak up or have anything to complain about.

Well, how serious was the issue and did Subaru make good on it, i.e., warranty it?

Not sure since I never owned a WRX/STI. NASIOC would give a general idea.

they are flexible because of the nature of the steel. they dont want them flexible. they just dont want them brittle either. you cant have both as far as the materials are concerned. thats why they go through the trouble of forging things and designing structurally sound components. flex in a crankshaft is just robbing power from the motor just like flex in a chassis is adding a vague feeling to the suspension.
