Even then, at was psi? 3? 4? Can't just slap a turbo on a N/A tuned engine and call it quits...gotta keep it within safe levels for the warranty!
i'd happily pay $6000 for a factory turbo knowing it'll come with warranty and it'll be street legal. I don't want to have to fork out ridiculous cash for smog every two years because my car isn't street legal with an after market turbo kit.

I live in Cali so that matters to me

Switching out heads would do it though.

Not that easy my friend. You're talking bout Subaru's boxer engine. If just switching out the heads would make 270~300hp, tons of Subaru ppl are making 300hp (NA). But the fact is different. Even w all the bolt ons, head port&polish, cams, High comp Pistons, NA EJ25 is pushing average of 195hp-ish.

And I would imagine the motor will be pretty optimized from the factory, thus not yielding any significant gains from bolt-ons.

So bumping up the valve count to twenty, better cooling passages, lighter springs, increased compression ratio, increased air/fuel ratio wouldn't make at least a 50hp increase? Pretty sure Toyota did at least +30hp with the 4A-GE, doing pretty much the same thing, with a 1.6I.

Yes you're right. Toyota did w 1.6L & 1.8L and so on... but have you forgotten something. This is Boxer engine, Toyota is already pushing this FB20 engine a 30~40hp plus (iirc stock FB20 is pushing 145hp). Now, it's like squeezing more hp out of F20C. You know how hard to get more hp out from that engine and keep it NA? Cost + Effort =/= Gain of HP. I'm pretty sure S2k owner can tell, but that's why you see a lot of ppl go w bolt on turbo or SC on S2k you get 300hp or more while put so much $ and not even breaking 300hp NA.

I don't care for boost, I like NA... but I do give a credit on boost for cost efficient to get more HP out of certain engine.

Was rather thinking the FB25, but I was unaware the 20 was 145hp out of the box, so I will bite my tongue on the matter.

I thought as much. This is why I've been considering a Rotrex build. I'm not looking for stupid amounts of horsepower, just enough to go with enough weight reduction to get a power to weight ratio close to my father-in-law's 2009 M5. With my Celica I had worked it out to be around 350hp as the goal, so it'll ultimately depend on the final specs of the car when we finally get thrown that bone.
