Morning car wash...

And I'm pretty sure I made a $300 mistake I've never seen mentioned on the forums... (and I know if someone noticed, there'll be an impending link). I bought the "brz sti short shifter" thinking it'd be shorter than GT86 stock... but once I got mine out... they looked REALLY close to identical. I was too made to stop so I just put the new one in. Can anyone confirm?

If you're referring to the handle length, that won't necessarily be different. I believe the length between the bearing/pivot and the part that connects to the transmission varies in length to modify how far the shifter travels to actuate the transmission

I get the concept but I'm pretty sure the 2020 86 has the same shifter, no joke. Like identical lol

Nope, I have 2020 86, installed the JDM TRD short shifter which is identical to the STI one. Side by side, handle length is practically the same, but the length of the bottom half that connects to the transmission is different lengths.

I'm not going to take it all apart again to measure it but there's no difference in the throws by feel either. And 25% is significant in feel. I'm telling you, whatever shifter came in my car from the factory is the same as the shifter I just replaced it with. I don't want it to be so and neither does my wallet.

EDIT: I'm not the only one that's noticed. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127013

Here's a picture of the OEM vs the JDM TRD quickshifter (which is identical to the STI). As you can see, the bottom portion is slightly longer on the quickshifter. It was the exact same with mine when I held them side by side before installing

So when I pulled out my stocker... there was zero difference on both the top length and the bottom from the pivot to the linkage hole.

EDIT: Also, that's an FRS and I'm really starting to wonder if toyota didn't just change it up later. Even the website mentioned the 2020s came with a short shifter. Hmm...
EDIT 2: Maybe Canadia got the shaft and didn't get a newer short shifter.

You may be right. The Toyota USA website specs list for the 86 does include short throw shifter but not the Toyota Canada site.
