Garage
It could be just a bad tune that caused excess wear.

Update time!!!

So the subaru dealership says the engine is toast. Sounds like a spun bearing leading to a conrod failure.

The guys says he has been working there for years and has not seen anything like this.

Apparently, an accumulation of mods (intake, exhaust, and tune) along with hard driving caused the eventual failure.

My take:

So apparently if you buy a sports car and drive it like a sports car, the engine will blow just outside of the warranty. I guess subaru knows what they are doing with that 60k mile warranty.

Being hard on any type of machinery and you're limiting the reliability. There's a fine line between abuse and "spirited driving". The farther toward the prior the less reliability there will be. Lots of other factors including proper maintenance, etc. will contribute to how long the engine will last.

There are a ton of guys I know that track their cars and the miles are getting high and they have no major problems and some are FI. Even though they track they have respect for their equipment. I know guys that just absolutely beat the crap out of their cars and are always having problems.

The track guys are fanatical about oil changes after every track day or 2 and many times that's the difference of a motor lasting or not.

It's unfortunate about your motor, been there done that. $$

One of the reasons why I wan't to keep my vehicle naturally aspirated. However simple bolt-ons and a proper tune should be pretty safe for that engine. I'm sorry to hear, I guess blown engines happen sometimes, even if maintenance was done properly.

I did bolt-ons and tunes on all the car I have ever owner without any issue. Of course the dealership will tell you that it caused engine wear and failure.

I'm curious as to which tune was used?

what is hard driving? did you redline every day multiple times a day? keep up with your oil changes and filter changes? careful not to lug the engine? according to most manufacturers even being in a lot of stop and go traffic is considered "severe conditions."
