The rev limiter is there to keep you from damaging the engine. Many people have already explained what it does. Anyways hitting it for a few seconds doesn't hurt anything. Now if you try to be ken block and bounce off the rev limiter constantly like you're doing gymkhana you're gonna damage something. Hitting rev limit is fine, what you should be worried about is down shifting and over reving the motor. That is very dangerous.

Only if you're aware. Otherwise the flashing triangle is just an ignored suggestion.

Yup... I think every manual driver has accidentally done it at least once in their life... smart ones put the clutch back in ASAP!

I did it before I rebuilt the engine in my other car (it wasnt rebuilt due to this ). Went from 5th to 2nd at ~70mph - I was aiming for 4th, but had been driving my brothers car that week leading up to it and his transmission was like driving a tractor. I caught it when the rpms just crested 7k rpm, and I nearly shit myself. I babied the car for about a week straight just to make sure there were no issues.

I've hit the limiter a few times in this car so far. It is a very soft limiter compared to other cars I've driven. You hardly notice that you have hit it at all.

Basically, yeah. I had just put the near-solid engine mounts on my Si and it was shifting like butter after that. So good that well.. I didn't feel any resistance from 3->2 instead of 3->4 @ 72mph. Unexpectedly, I was thrown into the windshield pretty much and saw the needle bounce past 9k (ScanGauge recorded ~9400 rpm) before I clutched back in very, VERY quickly.

Did a compression test and everything was fine, damn K20 was a tank! I've been told it can take up to about 10k rpm on the factory internals. Phew...

As for the limiter, you could bounce off it all day and the car would be fine (within reason). It's just not very smart to because it's not beneficial to you to sit on it. Sure, hit it and quit it (shift) sometimes, but you're better off shifting before it. I have my shift light set to 6600 (buzzer on) so by the time the light comes on, I'll have a good second to shift before fuel cut. Obviously, I usually shift far before this but it's just based on feel/style/hearing the engine. Some days I like winding her up to 5k and beyond, other days I go for economy at 3k-4k. Sadly, I can't shift before 3k without feeling like a granny.

Does anyone else that has the buzzer turned on have trouble hearing it? Its very faint and I need to listen really closely. The engine noise nearly drowns it out.

Just to clarify, I was originally making a need for speed reference about the light and the perfect shift...

LOL.. read mine... (This was back in 2001) I was racing a friend and went from 3rd @90 mph to 2nd trying to go to fourth ... it wasn't pretty. The car revved to 10k something. It was a single cam civic. I put it in neutral too late. Engine stalled. It would never again turn on. When it was taken apart, two pistons MELTED , valves where nowhere to be found just an amazing mess. My friends could not believe it wasn't running NOS. Also, I still can't believe how a Rod didn't fly out.

The rev-limiter in this car is extremely soft... it doesn't feel like "hitting a wall" at all - in fact it seems designed for hoonigans to just allow the car to sit softly on redline without going over. It's fantastic.

You can literally sit there, throttle to the floor, doing donuts all day and the limiter just keeps the engine in a happy place.. it doesn't bounce off and cut out like most cars.

That said, I haven't tested this at the high end, where the limiter is being cut out due to vehicle speed (rather than engine speed).. someone mentioned this was like hitting a wall, but I can't verify personally.

The car doesn't pull the hardest near redline. That is stupid. Cars aren't built from factory with peak torque at 8000RPM. After all - these are street cars. Cars travel FASTER at 8000 rpm than they would at say, 6000rpm. But power is not torque. And torque is what puts you back in your seat.

The only difference between 4000rpm and 8000rpm is about 4000rpm. The engine does all the same things. Rev limit protects the head from things like valve float.

Also, of you look carefully, there is a light on the dashboard that flashes when you make a "perfect shift" and you will get a little boost in acceleration...

Sooooooo much win I almost cried....

Bravo sir Bravo,

makes me want to play need for speed
