Washington declared ALL semi-autos as assault transmissions last election.
I disagree with their definition though.

For guns, semi-auto means that certain actions, such as ejecting the casing and chambering the next round, are performed automatically. What keeps it from being fully automatic is that you have to pull the trigger once per round. Which is a very small detail to me, I mean why not just legalize automatic weapons, oh god here goes this thread. For cars, manual means you have to make the shifts yourself, auto means the car does it for you. But semi-auto (not an official term, just what I'm calling it) means that you tell it when to shift but don't have to make the shifts yourself. To me, the fact that the driver determines the shift points is far more important than torque converter vs DCT. But then that distinction is further blurred in cars with paddle shifters not as good as ours. I've heard that the Miata takes paddle pulls as suggestions to be taken into consideration, rather than commands to shift now. |

Forgot about the cost part. I’ve never considered the cost a factor so I forgot that one. I learned on a MT and was autoxing with my dad before I even owned my first car so naturally I wasn’t even considering an AT on my first purchase. Fuel economy and shift time wasn’t even a factor for me personally. I didn’t own an auto until my family out grew a sedan and we needed a full size SUV. |

Ease of maintenance and cost of repair was a big reason to get a standard transmission. Auto's were still a little "voodoo" for the backyard mechanic.
None of my first 10 cars saw a garage. It wasn't even considered an option or thought about. You broke it, you fixed it. I don't even think about if a car is manual or auto anymore. I jump in look around and go. It makes zero difference to me. I really like the AT FR-S and I know it not as involving as my MT car, but I like paddle shifting the AT. |

I write all my code in assembly because I need that control.

Pfft… if you really want control, you would be coding directly in binary, no compilers required.
