This is very true especially working at a bank where VPs just meant top sales and they are a dime a dozen. The real ranking came in the form of sales revenue where they are numbered in their respective LOBs. We had the best time dealing with these high rollers at work as they considered everyone that are hired at the company supposedly "highly educated" and should be spoken and treated as such regardless of pay band.

When I first started out working at Big Blue I came to realized that the Americans addressed their clients by "Sir" and "Ma'am", yet in Canada this would be considered awkward and should address them by their first names instead.

Over the years I've got a few "you don't need to call me sir" comments from Canadian bankers.

Everyone goes by their first name where I work. At least in my experience we don't really have a concept of rank, but rather we are all just filling different roles. People get more respect for doing their job well rather than for what job they do. At least that's what I like to think .

Oh yes, I reckon I should give @DarkPira7e , a straight answer.

In my retirement years, I am known as Dad, Pa-pa or (whatever mrs humfrz decides to call me, depending on the situation.) I usually address people as sir or hon, because I usually can't remember either their first or last name.

So I should just call you dad then?
Thank you for your detailed reply, the more replies I read, I get the feeling that I'm just stubborn. Until I'm asked or corrected, I'll continue as I have been although outside of the workplace, when I go see a doctor or whatnot, I address them formally regardless of how close we are (unless they specify otherwise).

Oh, you can just pick one of the many names mrs humfrz has for me - when she is mad at me -
