The S2000 has the best headlights of any car I've ever driven with an OEM setup. The setup in my E36 M3 was better - but also completely custom built.

The BRZ lights aren't bad, but they aren't anything special. Neither are the Focus headlights.
I replaced my D4S bulbs with Dama brand several months ago and they are much better than stock D4S bulbs.

I'm delighted with my 18's headlamps. They are a step ahead of the D2S EU HIDs on my old B5, and slightly better than our 17 GTI.

What's shocking to me is how bad halogen reflectors can be. We also have an 07 Corororolla and an 86 MR2. The 6054s on the MR2 are actually pretty good, and leaps and bounds better than the reflectors on the roro. How did those ever get approved?!

Here in OH, it seems like every 4th car has their high beams on. I attribute this to them having at least ONE low beam burned out, so instead of going to the store and buying a $7 bulb, it is just cheaper and easier to use their high beams...that is until one of those burn out.

Next, there is the problem with 1 in 15 cars running fancy (ebay/Amazon) LED light bars as normal, forward facing lights that have a flood light pattern. This urks me to no end as these LED light bars were not meant for road use, especially on streets with street lamps every 100 yards. These people also seem to have at least ONE low burned out too.

I so wish OH would institute a Mandatory, yearly vehicle inspection and check for the simple things - working headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights, to get your annual plate renewal. Oh, and of course, check to make sure the ENTIRE exhaust system in intact and not missing from the cat back or dangling by one hanger.

I don't care if half your door is missing because of rust, I just don't want to be blinded at night; I want to be able to see your tail lights at night, and that you are applying your brakes. So many cars with TWO out of THREE brake lights not functioning in this state.

Make the inspection $10. Is that too much to ask for?

Similar problem in NJ, but it's more so with guys that hook up their Jeeps or pickups, they usually have a combination of HID/LED bulbs (in their halogen housings) with one of those 3 to 4 foot long blinding LED bars on their roof. Looks bad/cheap and is blinding to other drivers, I wonder if they are unaware, or just don't care.

PNW has plenty of these assholes too. It's deliberate passive-aggressive douchebaggery.

because FMVSS 108 only specifies output within the central part of the beam. halogen bulbs are perfectly legal because US lighting standards are literally from the dark ages yet, and don't actually contain any updated info for any technology after halogen.

Ugh, don't even get me started on the high majority of "built" Jeeps/trucks, light bars, and poorly setup/aimed lights. I hate the "offroad" audience in general, most of them being posers and wanna-be hardasses. It's the guys that actually know what they're doing who don't bother with any of the annoying habits/trends.

I come from the offroad world - I actually had a *BUILT* TJ (wouldn't take you much effort to find it if you're curious) - no light bars, angry eyes or other bullshit. I ran one set of high quality (JW Speaker) LED headlights that I took the time to properly aim. No extra exterior forward lights or lame light bars. The light output of those headlights was immense and right where you wanted it. Not once did I get flashed.

Just took delivery of a 2018 last night. Drove it back from Toronto to Ottawa (450km). In clear weather, the headlights are super bright. Fantastic.

There were a few instances of really bad blowing snow though. I actually feel that the colour temperature of the light and its intensity made it more difficult to drive. It illuminated all the snow in the air very strongly -- to the point where it made it tough to focus on anything beyond any immediate snow flakes.

Decided that was a good time to pullover for dinner considering conditions were getting eerily close to the 70-car pileup that happened earlier that day on the 400.

Be careful what you ask for. You ask for an annual vehicle inspection to check a few safety items and you end up opening the door to inspections like they have in CA or some European countries where you get dinged for modifying anything. I am a former Ohio resident that lived in one of the 4 eCheck counties in the state and I never enjoyed the trips in to get certified before renewing registration even though it was every other year.

I do understand your frustration with the light bars and poorly installed HID kits which blind oncoming traffic. The problem is that most inspections are done during business hour ie. daytime and those lights will likely slip though anyway because they do not blind as much in daylight.

Agree with everything you said about the safety inspections being a pain, although I would rather have a safety inspection than emissions which is really more "are all your sensors still working?" than it really is about emissions.

It's been a while since I lived in NC/VA both who had safety inspections but at least one of them (I believe NC) included headlight alignment as part of the inspection when I was having it done there. That was one of the things they always managed to charge you extra to fix "while you are here".

What used to be the premium option for headlights. Now being replaced by LEDs.
