Hey tech-like folks! If you had to buy one of these cable modems in the next week or so, which would you pick and why?

Netgear CM500(16x4), CM600(24x8), or CM1000 (docis3.1)

Mostly trying to guage future-proofing vs cost as a CM500 will have plenty of throughput for us on Comcast. I would think docis3.1 devices will come down to sub $100 by the time I'd get any benefit out of it anyway?

Yes, a car forum is a strange place for this, but it's not really a life changing decision lol.

It's like I need to jack the car up to get it on the jacks... blargh.

I'm already picturing some fitted urethane blocks to replace those dinky ones. The extra surface area will distribute the load along the pinch welds much more evenly, making slots unnecessary.

Come to think of it, wood will be fine as long as the grain is perpendicular to the welds.

That could have been one or more of many things.

* the pads were glazed over

* a rock (or something) was trapped between the rotor and the pad

* they were wet

* it was your imagination -

* other things

My dad suspected a rock or other debris. I'll bring them down when I visit Ultra and have him inspect. He'll probably give me a quick headslap for worrying and changing pads way early

Even soft compounds can get squeaky if they start tracking a bit askew.

New pucks will push back the pots in your caliper. They are happiest when fully retracted.

If you have been judiciously topping off your brake reservoir, be careful about squeezing the pots. The fluid has to go somewhere.

Laziness was advantageous this time! Luckily, I haven't been topping off the reservoir. My dad had me keep an eye on the fluid level while he C-clamped the pistons back in. Side note: I now know what "pots" was being referred to in the paper that came with the new pads. My dad and I was confused when we read over that.

My rule, go for beefiest but within your budget. Looks like the CM1000 is $155 on Amazon. If this is going to be your "forever" modem, I'd go for that. "Amortized" over 5 years, that's only 31 dollars/year! (Sorry, I like to do this for most of my purchases for some reason....)

Nah. Nothing wrong with early service. Catch stuff before it has a chance to go really sideways.

I've had squeaking for months now coming to a stop on the stock pads, and I'm only at 21k. I dunno if a rock or "something" can be stuck that long.

Another theory I had was maybe the pin thing (I can't recall the name) might just be prematurely contacting the rotor or other piece it lands on after a while. Feel free to correct me.

Very true. In the Army it was called PM (Preventative Maintenance) - best to replace a worn firing pin back at base camp, rather than have one break while under fire.

Yep, we didn't have PM back in my civilian day. Why? Because we couldn't afford it. We could barely afford getting another piece, out of a junk yard, when something broke -

So that's exactly my internal argument for the cm1000 as well. But...

There's no such thing as a forever device, and it'll cost half that in a few years if it isn't obsolete... Considering I'm not necessarily in my forever house, and might not even have a broadband connection in my next, is it worth it? Even so, a device that will last me x years is a half (cm600) or a third (cm500) of that price. Is x enough time to bring down the price? Will I go to some other distribution of internet's in x time? Aaaarrrghhhhh!

Well, what I would have done, back in the day, would to have taken the wheels off, pull the caliper, pull the pads, scuff up the surface of the pads, check the rotor for any signs of abnormal wear then put it all back together.

So, I'm forgetting something, but that's the reason I'm not doing my own work anymore. Today, I would drop the car off at my local shop and tell them to fix my squeaking brakes. They would run me home, in my car, and we would discuss the situation as they were squeaking. I would then take a nap, wait for their call and they would come pick me up when the car was fixed. I would pay them and everything would be all better.

I use the talls for the 911, the pinch weld ones for the twin. I've heard of blocks prematurely splitting in half when DYI pinch weld slots.

Radial arm saw is prolly lonely.
