Well, spike021, first off, I'd suggest you do some personal/professional soul searching and try to figure out if any of your boss's critique of your work has any validity.

I would then make an appointment with him and discuss your feelings. Also, ask him how he would suggest that you improve your performance.

I've found over the years, that it is not a good idea to "take on" your boss. It's pretty much of a no win situation for you.

If the work situation becomes intolerable, I would suggest that you look around for another position within the company or find a new company to work for.

Life is too damn short to be miserable at work!

I hope you get your work issues resolved -

I'd say in 90% of the situations at work I don't have any of the issues my boss has described. Problem is he's managing like 10 teams right now, and I get the feeling sometimes that he's getting people and issues mixed up.

For instance, for one project a few months ago, he was even working with me on it some of the time, and then during a team meeting he said "hey Josh, it seems like this project is actually going to take a substantial more amount of work and we'll probably want to re-do it from scratch. Might be good to put it off until we finish the current main team project so we can put more people on this, what do you think?" So of course I say yes, it's shelved like he asked, and yet that's one example where he could be forgetful and think "well, Josh said to hold off on it and chose to run off and do some other work, clearly he gave up on it."

For a more recent task, I was asked to pair with a teammate on it. Teammate kept saying he'd do it by himself, but time went on and he wouldn't start it. I kept prodding because I knew it needed to be done, finally we started working on it. Yet, it's another example that's been mentioned to me as something I "didn't take by the horns and jump in to complete it".

Errr.. excuse me Boss but if you're not around to see me pushing teammate A to do it then why are you blaming me?

Anyway, yeah.

I really just need a new job, and I'm in the process of hunting right now. And yeah, I wouldn't go against a boss.

Well, like I said, I suggest you have a face to face with your boss and clear the air.

I have found that sometimes we get blamed for something that wasn't done or screwed up - and it wasn't our fault. It's just one of the hazards of working. Just don't let it get you down.

Like today, when the toddler and I got up from our nap, I thought I'd do the right thing and change her into her swim diaper and swim suit before I took her out on the deck with her sisters who were swimming in the pool and ma-ma was supervising.

I thought that ma-ma would be happy that I did that. Well, ma-ma wasn't all that happy, because I had put the swim diaper on backwards (the picture goes in the back) AND I put her swim suit on backwards (the bow goes in the back). -

Tomorrow is Friday - a NEW day -

Unfortunately. I wouldn't recommend it. I'll sum up your average government employee.

Very few people are stupid; it's just that most employees here have no real incentive to use their intelligence in their jobs. So they reserve their mental energy for their hobbies, personal relationships, and other things outside the office. With our government compensation systems, an employee often uses most of his/her initiative figuring out how to work less without losing his/her job. Doesn't matter if you are great at your job and kick ass, or are a waste of space, if you are a senior accountant, you get the same pay.

So... Interesting Friday. I might have mentioned it before, but I'm so sporadic here who knows what is floating around. My team/job are being eliminated in favor of outsourcing. About 80% of our work has been transferred out already, so I barely do what I used to do. I'm pretty much customer service for vendors at this point.

My team had 6 people supporting our business and 4 people supporting a different one. For my business, 2 have already left, and 2 others are about to leave (just announced today, one's last day is next week, and the other just accepted a new role today), and 2 of the other 4 just transferred out as well.

I have a phone interview for one role and an in person for another on Monday. This team is about gone.

Nothing really unique to the government about this except the "same pay" portion. My experience in the corporate world is it is just as likely the "ass needs to be kicked" folks make more as the "kick ass" folks because, similar to real estate, all the money is made at the hire. After that most corporations have very specific limits on "performance raises" etc from year to year. Until/unless you get a promotion or change companies there usually aren't any big swings in pay based on performance alone.

Not quite as structured as government step raises, and there is a little variation for performance, but not as much as you might think.

Email exchange with a recent acquisition:

"We started migrating to the corporate managed X security product and had some questions about how you manage it."

"I'm afraid we haven't used that product in about six years. Where did you get the install?"

"Oh. I was told this was the corporate managed install."

"Local IT person? What are you doing? Stahhhp."
