It's literally a ten minute exercise if you stop and take a coffee break. Simple algebra clearly shows that in the best case scenario, where the tougher parts, all of which further diminish the contribution of the pulley, are neglected, still shows that in first gear the pulley soaks about half a percent of the total energy requirement. Taller gears are fractions of that, so...

Actually it hasn't been bad at all. The only antagonist has been the guy that claims everybody else is. In fact he has said or done just about everything he complains about others saying or doing.
