The Varis fender is defiantly my favorite part of that whole kit. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with

If I open the garnishes to the body of the 86 I may just leave them open... if I open up something similar to my previously posted pic... I may install some mesh.
By the way, I plan on these being functional in so that they will be hollow with openings on either fender. __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook |

Release heat...
There is some back and forth on this thread as to whether it is truly functional http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70815 Whether it truly is functional I don't really care... lol The op in the linked post stated exactly how I will feel about it... it will be functional in an aesthetic way (at the very least). __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook |

I'm still toying with the rear quarter overfender... tying to make it perfect... about 97% there though.
I've been also effing around with the Varis inspired garnish design. Check it out... ![]() ![]() ![]() I may use Sika flex to create the inside lip form of the opening... __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook |

I finally got my overfender lined up just the way I want it...I'm really happy about that! So now I've started the modification to the gas cap area and trying to decide how I'm going to do the latching mechanism. Briefly messed with it yesterday and it seems like it's going to be trickier than I thought, at least the way I was thinking about doing it. Either way I'll find a way to get it done.
I was also able to complete another task yesterday... I was able to pull my garnish mold out without any issue... It came out pretty freaking clean. The pictures below are out of the mold with a little bit of dremeling and sanding... I still have to sand some more, use some body filler to smooth it out, sand again, glaze it if needed, primer it, then sand again. I also need to make a lip at the open side and mounting flanges on the bottom side. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook |

Here are some pics of the gas cap installed...no spacer installed...
I hope to begin work on it tomorrow... ![]() Screw/bolts for cap is temporary... going to be using stainless steel A2-70 flat head hex bolts. ![]() ![]() ![]() __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook Last edited by zeal86; 04-06-2018 at 05:26 PM. |

Update:
I added and sanded down bondo to get the garnish smooth and even. So I'm pretty much ready to add the flanges and complete the inner lip on my Varis-like garnish mod. I hope to have a primered part soon. If I'm diggin the end product then I'll make the other side. Then I'll have to make two molds in case I decide to make more of them. I closed up the opening for the gas cap door a little. With the way the cap fits now, the opening was long on the fwd and aft side but okay on the top and bottom. I also smoothed out the inner part of the gas cap area and filled in pin holes and low spots with glazing putty. Once the door cap is gapped to my liking, I'll add some short strand fiberglass to the door top so I can block it across overfender opening. The middle is slightly low... shouldn't take much fiberglass. more pics to come... __________________________________________ Instagram @zeal.eightsix zeal.eightsix Facebook |

I got a real late start yesterday but still made some progress...
Gas cap sits low on the top half after my modification so I stripped, cleaned, and added some fiberglass. I added a bit more after the fact. Anyway, today I'll sand and block the area then decide where else the lid may need to be blocked. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm almost there with this part of my install...definitely the trickiest part. The molding will be a task but I don't think it will be as tasking as the gas cap modification (lots of trial and error). Once the gas cap modification is complete, I think my install will move along a bit faster. IG @zeal.eightsix |

Some more progress... still need to sand a tiny bit more then slap some glaze coat on it. Finally I'll sand and shape it with 320 to finish it off before prepping the cap for primer. Also, I need to close up the opening in the overfender a bit more. I had to sacrifice one of my two Quick-Latches during the sanding process.
New bracket... I had the nut welded on the back side. Hardware will be different in final install. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I may have this part completed by Sunday! IG @zeal.eightsix |
